Dunleavy set to turn pro

ESPN.com news services

The recent tradition of Duke players leaving early for the NBA is most likely continuing.

Even though Mike Dunleavy is the latest Duke starter to enter the draft -- following Jason (or Jay) Williams and Carlos Boozer -- there's still some hope for Duke fans. Dunleavy, a junior, didn't sign with an agent and thus could return to campus in Durham, N.C.

My gut feeling is that he's testing the waters, and rightfully so. But I feel the young man will decide to return to school next season. More...

Duke junior forward Mike Dunleavy Jr. will declare for the 2002 NBA draft, ESPN has learned. Dunleavy will not hire an agent, however, leaving open the possibility that he could return for his senior season.

Dunleavy will make the announcement at a Saturday news conference.

Word out of Duke for some time has been that Dunleavy would not declare for the draft. However, NBA scouts have expected he will declare and should be a top 10 pick, according to ESPN.com sources.

Dunleavy's father has been making inquiries with NBA teams about his son's prospects for the upcoming draft.

If it is determined that he would be a high lottery pick, the younger Dunleavy would likely stay in the draft. If it is determined that he would be selected at the middle to low end of the lottery, then Dunleavy would probably withdraw from the draft and return to Duke.
