Midseason report

Herbstreit's fabulous freshmen

Here are my top five freshman players at midseason, listed alphabetically:

T.J. Duckett, RB/LB, Michigan State
Duckett has shown the ability to play on the both sides of the ball. He has developed into a young Ron Dayne with his bruising style of running the ball. He has scored four touchdowns as Michigan State's short-yardage back.

T.J. Duckett
True freshman T.J. Duckett is a big reason why Michigan State is contending in the Big Ten.

Terrence Edwards, WR, Georgia
Edwards is a flashy receiver with big-play potential written all over him. He has great hands and leaping ability. Edwards and quarterback Quincy Carter will be a combination we will be hearing a lot from over the next year and a half.

Earnest Graham, RB, Florida
Graham gives the Gators a big power back with speed, something they have lacked since Fred Taylor left for the NFL. The fact Graham missed three games with a deep thigh bruise has showed their offense's production. The Gators have to run the ball, and Graham is the guy.

Michael Vick, QB, Virginia Tech
For all the hype and pressure that comes along with quarterbacking a team that is chasing a national championhip, Vick hasn't missed a beat. He has the ability to run the option and beat you with his speed, but he can also sit in the pocket and deliver a ball 60-70 yards downfield on a strike. He is the total package and becoming a better quarterback each week with experience.

Derek Watson, RB, South Carolina
Unfortunately, Watson is playing in an offense that hasn't produced many points, but he is a great individual talent. He has the ability to break tackles, he has breakaway speed, and he can run with power. He is the ultra-back who happens to be struggling in the current Gamecock offense.

Honorable mention
Paul Arnold, RB, Washington; Anquan Boldin, WR, Florida State; Brooks Bollinger, QB, Wisconsin; Bethel Johnson, WR, Texas A&M; Cory Redding, DE, Texas; Clifton Smith, ILB, Syracuse, Lucas Staley, RB, BYU.
