Tech Stings Stanford
Georgia Tech's defense stuffs Stanford's Kerry Carter. Georgia Tech took out its frustrations of the last month on No. 11 Stanford Thursday in the Seattle Bowl. The Yellow Jackets used a dominating defense and an efficient offense to knock off the Cardinal 24-14 under interim coach Mac McWhorter.

"Georgia Tech is still gonna put up one heck of show when they take the field. They will show the California kids how real smash-mouth ACC football is played!"

WITH ROD GILMORE
This game was played against the backdrop of the coaching vacancy at Georgia Tech. Tech's players apparently believe that interim coach Mac McWhorter has a chance to get the job, because they played their hearts out for him. The Yellow Jackets' goal-line stand on Stanford's first drive set the tempo. On offense, Georgia Tech was loose and free, throwing the ball downfield and taking advantage of the Cardinal cornerbacks on occasion.
Stanford QB Randy Fasani struggled and made some poor decisions. Finally, coach Ty Willingham replaced him in the fourth quarter with Chris Lewis, giving the Cardinal a spark. Georgia Tech missed academically ineligible RB Joe Burns and might have put the game away earlier in the fourth if it could run, but QB George Godsey made some key throws for first downs with Tech clinging to a three-point lead -- and that was the difference.
In the big picture, this is a bad loss for the Pac-10. Now two league teams have played poorly in bowl games (USC lost to Utah). Stanford was one of the top teams in the Pac-10 and No. 9 in the BCS, and lost to a Tech team that came into this game with lots of problems (from O'Leary's departure to Burns' troubles). It's hard to call the Pac-10 the nation's top conference after these two losses.

IT WAS OVER WHEN
The Yellow Jackets came through with a huge goal-line stand on the game's opening drive. Tech stopped Stanford three times at the 1-yard line and set a defensive tone that wouldn't let down the entire game.
GAME BALL GOES TO
Interim coach Mac McWhorter. It would have been easy for the Yellow Jackets to collapse after the George O'Leary mess, RB Joe Burns' eligibility problems and a disappointing season. But McWhorter had his team ready. He may not get the Tech head coaching job permanently, but here's guessing someone, somewhere noticed the job he did here.
