| ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Michigan coach Lloyd Carr doesn't
believe the Big Ten has any reason to apologize for the officiating
during the Wolverines' victory over Illinois.
"I have made my extreme displeasure (known) with the conference
office regarding their press release," Carr said Tuesday. "I made
my comments to them and I stand my comments that I think the game
was relatively well officiated."
The Big Ten sent a release on Monday stating that the officials
made two mistakes when the No. 9 Wolverines beat the No. 24
Fighting Illini 35-31 Saturday in Champaign, Ill.
"Unfortunately, two incorrect fumble calls ruled on by the game
officials in the latter part of the fourth quarter did not measure
up to the quality of play and coaching that was presented during
the game," the release said.
The Big Ten believes the first error occurred with 3:53 left
when Illinois recovered one of its own fumbles, but
the officials ruled the Wolverines recovered it.
The Big Ten said the second mistake happened with approximately
2:30 remaining when Illinois recovered a fumble at its 3 but the
officials ruled that Michigan didn't fumble.
"When errors of judgment or rules application have a
significant impact on the game, the conference believes public
acknowledgment of the error is appropriate," the Big Ten said in
its release. | ALSO SEE
