Mackey pleads guilty to misdemeanor

Associated Press

BOULDER, Colo. -- University of Colorado football player Allen Mackey has pleaded guilty to one misdemeanor count of providing alcohol to a minor the night of an off-campus recruiting party.

Under a plea agreement, Mackey was ordered Tuesday to perform 36 hours of community service. If Mackey, a cornerback taking a leave of absence from the Buffaloes to improve his grades, stays out trouble for the length an 18-month deferred sentence, there will be no conviction on his record.

The Dec. 7 recruiting party spawned charges against five football players.

Ron Monteilh has been exonerated; Marques Harris and Corey Alexander were sentenced to penalties similar to Mackey's, which also include submitting to random drug tests, prosecutor Pete Maguire said.

"Hopefully I won't be back in a courtroom ever,'' Mackey said after the hearing.

Maguire said the only pending case related to the recruiting party is that of CU cornerback Clyde Surrell, who received a petty offense ticket for possession of less than 1 ounce of marijuana.

A CU student alleged she was raped at the party, but prosecutors said they did not have enough evidence to file charges.
