Irish Eyes Not Smiling On Davie

AFTER THOUGHTS
Best Bargain in College Football
The best deal in college football is in Knoxville. There sits Tennessee's Kelley Washington, walk-on.

All Washington did was single-handedly lead eighth-ranked Tennessee over No. 14 LSU Saturday by catching 11 passes for a school-record 256 yards. All 11 passes were for first downs, including a 70-yard TD.

And here's the best part -- he's not on scholarship. That's right, Washington is a 22-year old freshman who spent four years playing baseball in the Florida Marlins system and isn't on scholarship. And the scary part is he's going to get better. He came to UT as a quarterback and is just learning the receiver position.

"I think about all the work I've done since I got here. I just feel it paid off tonight," Washington said. "It was just a special night."

Quote of the Year (for now)
"Their quarterback (Jonathan Smith) said that we haven't faced a top-notch offense yet, and I guess we haven't faced one yet."
-- UCLA linebacker Robert Thomas after the Bruins' 38-7 victory over Oregon State.

Memo to Mr. Smith -- When your only victory of the season is a mediocre effort against New Mexico State, you really shouldn't be popping off.

Small School Love
Mount Union won its 68th straight game and 61st in a row in the Ohio Conference, routing Ohio Northern 31-3. ... Catawba won its 21st straight regular-season game, beating Newberry 31-3. ... Georgia Southern extended its winning streak to nine games with a 31-14 victory over VMI.

  • Woody Dantzler accounted for 418 of Clemson's 502 yards, throwing for 254 yards and two TDs and rushing for 164 yards and two TDs in the Tigers' 47-44 overtime victory.
  • Phil Petty brought South Carolina back from a 36-24 deficit, throwing a touchdown pass with 2:18 left as the Gamecocks beat Alabama for the first time ever, 37-36. _ Antwone Savage caught two long touchdown passes and threw for another on a fake punt as No. 3 Oklahoma beat No. 11 Kansas State 38-37.

  • Payton Perrett threw for 533 yards and five touchdowns, including a 15-yarder with 38 seconds left, to give Mississippi College a 36-32 win over Sul Ross State.
  • It was only a matter of time before Notre Dame fans started crying. The only surprise is it took this long.

Now, with the Irish off to an 0-3 start -- its first ever -- and riding a a four-game losing streak counting the loss to Oregon State in the Fiesta Bowl, fans are now calling for Bob Davie's job.

"I can't wait until the season is over and he is gone," Pete Montenaro, a sophomore from Rochester, N.Y., said after Saturday's 24-3 loss at Texas A&M. "I don't see how it's possible he'd still be here at the end of the season. I think it's obvious Bob Davie doesn't belong at Notre Dame."

The start is the worst since the Irish began playing football in 1887. Two of the three losses this year have been by more than two touchdowns.

"I'd say students are very disappointed and not too optimistic," Erin Long, a junior from Atlanta, said. "The people I talk to blame mainly the coaching."

Davie is less than 10 months removed from signing a five-year contract after leading the Irish to seven straight wins last season and a berth in the Fiesta Bowl. The Irish lost 41-9 in the bowl game to Oregon State, however, and things have continued to get worse.

"They never should have handed him the contract extension in the first place," Katey Kertez, a sophomore from Chicago, said. "I think most people feel we have a lot of talent and it's being wasted. I think Davie should be fired."

The loss leaves Davie with a 30-22 record, not much better than the 30-26-1 record posted by Gerry Faust from 1981-85. That's not exactly a record that will inspire confidence from the Irish faithful.

Of course, there are some who say the coaching staff deserves more time.

"Bob Davie got us to the Fiesta Bowl last year. It's not his fault. It's not just one person," Meghan Martin, a freshman from Pittsburgh, said.

But, man, that is the minority voice and one that is likely to get drowned out even more if the Irish don't start winning -- and soon.

SEC learns to play nice -- or else

Note to the SEC: Be nice to the Florida equipment staff.

Seems the Mississippi State fans got a little carried away celebrating last year's 47-35 victory in Starkville, Miss., and, basically, knocked equipment manager Clay Carter a little loopy after they stormed the field.

So, with the Gators winning 45-0, Carter sidled up to coach Steve Spurrier and asked for one more TD. A little revenge, if you will.

"I said, 'Coach, can you put one more in the end zone,' and he said, 'We're going to try to,"' Carter said.

One Brock Berlin 23-yard pass to Kelvin Kight and it was 52-0 with under two minutes left to play. Carter said he thought it was "great they would do something like that for someone on the student staff."

And. of course, Spurrier wasn't going to apologize.

"That was for Clay," said Spurrier, who also awarded Carter a game ball. "And we wanted to try to score 50. We were too close to 50 not to. Plus, they were blitzing. If they want to get mad about it, it's OK. That's perfectly legal."

So remember, play nice with the Gator staff or it could come back to bite you.

  • Duke fell to Virginia 31-10, extending its losing streak to 16 -- the nation's longest.

  • Dayton returned three interceptions of Duquesne quarterback Niel Loebig for touchdowns, including a 100-yarder by Mark Kasmer, as the Flyers beat Duquesne 42-16.
