As If Winning Isn't Tough Enough
Apparently, the fourth-quarter comebacks weren't hard enough for No. 10 Washington. Now, they're doing it with the backup quarterback.
It was the third time in four games the Huskies come back in the fourth quarter to win and the eighth in two years. But this time, it was a little trickier. Starting QB Cody Pickett left the game early in the second half with a sprained shoulder and backup Taylor Burton led the Huskies from a 17-14 deficit to the 27-24 last-second win over USC.
"I practice with intensity and I was ready to start," said Barton, a junior college transfer who led City College of San Francisco to the national title last year. "I didn't come up here to be a backup."
Quote of the Year (for now)
"If Rex can throw the ball around like this, it's going to be hard for teams to stop us, because we've got some good receivers."
-- Florida coach Steve Spurrier.
No duh. We could have never guessed that from Grossman's 1,865 yards and 20 TDs this season.
Small School Love
Eight of Curt Anes' 21 completions were for touchdowns in Grand
Valley State's 63-17 win over Ferris State. Anes set a Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference record, as did David Kircus,
who caught five touchdowns for the Lakers. ... Darnell Kennedy threw five TDs and ran for another score to help
Alabama State overcome Jackson State's Robert Kent, who passed for
595 yards and six touchdowns, in a wild 61-58 victory. The teams
combined for seven touchdowns and 49 points in the third quarter.

SATURDAY'S STARS |
Florida's Rex Grossman passed for a school-record 464 yards and five TDs as the second-ranked Gators rolled over No. 20 LSU 44-15.
Levron Williams gained 280 yards on 20 carries and scored a
school-record six touchdowns in Indiana's 63-32 win over Wisconsin.
Daniel Graham made a juggling, one-handed catch to give
Colorado its only touchdown in a 16-6 as the Buffaloes upset No. 13
Kansas State.
Bruce Perry ran for 143 yards and a touchdown as No. 25
Maryland remained unbeaten -- and alone atop the ACC -- by defeating
Virginia 41-21.
Tony Lukins tied an NCAA Division I-A record by returning two
kickoffs for touchdowns as New Mexico State beat Tulsa 24-7.
Jason White, filling in for injured Oklahoma QB Nate Hybl
helped convert a fourth-and-2 in the second quarter on an option
pitch and completed 16 of 23 passes for 108 yards as the No. 3
Sooners outlasted No. 5 Texas 14-3.

Poor Fresno State.
It finally gets a day off after capturing the country's imagination with its undefeated start, blue-collar style and Heisman candidate QB David Carr only to watch its BCS chances take a kick in the teeth.
With Wisconsin's amazing loss to hapless Indiana and Oregon State's sudden free fall back into the hapless days of yesteryear, the Bulldogs once formidable schedule suddenly doesn't look as tough.
With strength of schedule one of the keys to Fresno State making the BCS, the Badgers and Beavers losing hurts. While Colorado is making a resurgence, including a win over No. 13 K-State Saturday, the Bulldogs are now a long shot to reach their goal.
And they didn't even do a thing.
Crouching Husker, Hidden RB
Ok...admit it. We like Eric Crouch. Really.
Yeah, we have people here in the office who can throw better spirals (that's right...we're not all pocket-protector wearing geeks), but we'd take Crouch if we needed someone to run the ball. He's the best running back lining up under center in the country.
Crouch set an NCAA Division I-A record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback Saturday night, scoring four times to push his total to 51 to break the mark of 49 set by Kareem Wilson of Ohio from 1995-98. Crouch also set a Nebraska record for rushing touchdowns, passing 1983 Heisman Trophy winner Mike Rozier's 49, etching yet another spot in the Huskers' record book.
Crouch, already Nebraska's career leader in total yards, left the game at the end of the third quarter with Nebraska leading 41-14. He finished with 15 carries for 104 yards and needs 141 rushing yards to reach the 3,000-yard mark for his career.
"He is as good as there is in college football. He is a legitimate Heisman contender," Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said. "He is as complete a quarterback as I have seen the whole time I've coached college football."
Tough Day to be a QB
Several teams had their starting quarterbacks injured. No. 3
Oklahoma's Nate Hybl hurt his right side in the first quarter of
the Sooners' 14-3 win over No. 5 Texas. Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops
declined to provide details of the injury.
Cody Pickett of No. 10
Washington separated his right shoulder in the second quarter of
the Huskies' 27-24 win over Southern Cal. His status for next
week's game at No. 9 UCLA is unknown.
No. 20 LSU's Rohan Davey
hyperextended his left knee in the second quarter of Florida's
44-15 rout of the Tigers. LSU coach Nick Saban said there was no
serious damage.
