Tanner: 'Denver is my home'

Associated Press

MINNEAPOLIS -- Denver women's basketball coach Pam Tanner, the latest candidate for the vacant Minnesota job, said Wednesday she had withdrawn from consideration.

``After serious soul searching, I have decided to remain in my current position,'' Tanner said in a news release. ``I appreciate the opportunity presented by the University of Minnesota, but I have come to the conclusion that Denver is my home.''

The Golden Gophers have been trying for more than seven weeks to replace coach Brenda Oldfield, who accepted the head coaching job at Maryland. Oldfield led the Gophers to a 22-8 record and an NCAA Tournament appearance last season.

Two weeks ago, former Southwest Missouri State coach Cheryl Burnett decided not to accept the Minnesota job.

Tanner, 34, has compiled a 112-83 record in seven seasons at Denver. She took over the program in 1995 when it was in NCAA Division II. The Pioneers jumped to Division I for the 1998-99 season, and two seasons later went 24-7 and made the NCAA tournament. Tanner was the Sun Belt coach of the year in 2000 and 2001.
