Week 5: Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton
ESPN.com

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 5:

AFC East
Team Comment
The Bills remain one of the healthiest teams in football. The only players on their injury report -- halfback Travis Henry (knee) and tight end Jay Riemersma (ankle) -- practiced Friday and will play against the Raiders. Henry remains the starter despite four lost fumbles in four games, including two fumbles that were taken back for touchdowns.
The Dolphins will have cornerback Patrick Surtain back after missing two games with a knee injury. That should help a pass defense that allowed five touchdown passes last week by Chiefs quarterback Trent Green. Marcus Spriggs takes over at left tackle for Mark Dixon, who's out with an ankle injury. Center Tim Ruddy will play and start despite being listed as questionable with a groin injury. Dixon could be available as a possible backup. The Dolphins play the Patriots Sunday.
Patriots wide receiver Troy Brown will wait until game time to see whether or not he will play Sunday against the Dolphins. The situation isn't any different than a week ago expect that Brown has had a chance to practice this week. The team left for Miami on Friday and had a practice there to adjust to the heat. Brown is coming off a medial collateral ligament injury that probably needs another week of rest, but the Patriots need Brown in the offense. The only Patriot who won't play is tight end Daniel Graham who has a shoulder injury suffered last week in San Diego. Guard Joe Andruzzi (knee) and defensive end Rick Lyle (back) made the trip to Miami and could be available. They didn't make the trip last week.
The Jets are going young. Wide receiver Wayne Chrebet is out with his knee. Chrebet has a severely bruised knee and a slight fracture in the leg. Kareem McKenzie will get the start again at right tackle despite a groin injury that has him listed as questionable. Santana Moss is expected to start at wide receiver after missing last week with a hamstring injury, but Edwards didn't officially say that he would be the starter. If he doesn't, Kevin Swayne would start. Linebacker Mo Lewis will start despite a hip injury. Middle linebacker Marvin Jones remains the starter, but Edwards plans to give James Darling a little more playing time. Rookie Jon McGraw is expected to get some of struggling strong safety Sam Garnes' playing time. Rookie Jonathan Goodwin is expected to rotate into the left guard position to give competition of J.P. Machado. The Jets added cornerback Ray Mickens to the injury list as probable with a knee injury. He was supposed to rotate more into the cornerback position to help Aaron Beasley. Defensive tackle Larry Webster was added as probable with a knee injury. He is expected to play. Chad Pennington starts as the quarterback against the Chiefs.

The Ravens came out of the Monday night victory over the Broncos healthy. Tight end Todd Heap will play despite a sore thigh. His two backups -- John Jones (chest) and Terry Jones (hand) -- will also be available. Linebacker J.R. Johnson, who was added to the injury report with a chest problem Thursday, was upgraded from questionable to probable Friday.
The Bengals got healthier as the week progressed even though they are banged up on the offensive line. Left tackle Richmond Webb is out for the season and guard Mike Goff remains out for another week with his lacerated leg. But right tackle Willie Anderson was upgraded the other day from questionable to probable on his sore hamstring. Wide receivers Danny Farmer (ankle) and Ron Dugans (abdomen) were upgraded from questionable to probable Friday. That leaves tight end Sean Brewer (knee) out and defensive end Vaughn Booker (ankle) as questionable. Booker has a chance to play because he's practiced the past couple of days. If he can't start, Bernard Whittington will continue as the starting end. Coach Dick LeBeau, who is starting Jon Kitna at quarterback, will start Peter Warrick and T.J. Houshmandzadeh (ribs) at wide receiver. Chad Johnson will be the third receiver. Michael Westbrook will come off the bench maybe as the fourth receiver. The Bengals visit the Colts Sunday.
Browns center Dave Wohlabaugh snapped with his left hand and may be able to play against the Ravens Sunday. Wohabaugh has been out with a broken bone in his right hand. Coach Butch Davis will make the decision Sunday morning whether to start him or keep Shaun O'Hara as the starter. It appears that he may lean to put in Wohlabaugh because they can move O'Hara back to his position at right guard. Paul Zukauskas has been starting for him while O'Hara has played center. Cornerback Corey Fuller did some individual drill practice Friday but remains a big question mark for Sunday's game against the Ravens. Fuller pulled his hamstring last week against Pittsburgh and couldn't finish the game. He would be replaced by either Anthony Henry or Lewis Sanders.
The Steelers won't have inside linebacker Kendrell Bell for the game against the Saints because his high ankle sprain. Also out are running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (ribs) and snapper Mike Schneck (elbow). Defensive tackle Kendrick Clancy (hamstring) and safety Mike Logan (hamstring) are practicing and vow to be able to play Sunday.

The Colts don't expect safety Cory Bird (hip) and defensive tackle Josh Williams (foot) to play Sunday against the Bengals. Williams needs another week to get ready to be on the field. This is a good chance that defensive tackle James Cannida will play after missing a couple of games with a knee injury. Looks as though it will come down to gametime decisions on guard Rick DeMulling (ankle) and fullback Jim Finn (foot). Waverly Jackson has been filling in for DeMulling all week. Jason Doering takes over for Bird at strong safety.
The Jaguars downgraded starting defensive tackle Larry Smith from probable to questionable Friday after his knee had some swelling. Smith had been starting with Marcus Stroud at defensive tackle. Rookie John Henderson may get his first start. Defensive end Tony Brackens (knee) and tight end Kyle Brady (concussion) will start against the Eagles.
Cornerback Samari Rolle did a little work and may be available for some backup duty trying to rush back from a pulled hamstring. He's not at full speed. He will see The question is whether coach Jeff Fisher will start Dainon Sydney or Mike Echols. Echols hurt his knee the other day. It's bursitis. Sydney has been inactive coming off of last year's knee injury. The Titans, who play the Redskins, will be without running back Robert Holcombe (hip), defensive end Jevon Kearse (foot) and wide receiver Derrick Mason (shoulder).

Broncos halfback Mike Anderson did a little work Friday but remains a longshot to play Sunday against the Chargers. The best that coach Mike Shanahan could say was that he wouldn't rule Anderson out for the game. Anderson's ankle has bothered him all week since he hurt it Monday night. The Broncos expect to start Orlandis Gary and use rookie Clinton Portis more if Anderson can't play. The other question is, who will do the blocking at fullback? Last week, the Broncos used Reuben Droughns but they may try Patrick Hape at fullback for blocking purposes. Anderson is the starting fullback, but he is also the main man in the one-back offense.
The Chiefs probably may not have cornerback Ray Crockett as the third cornerback because of a hamstring injury. Crockett did some things in practice, but it looks as though he may sit out another week. He's still questionable for the Jets game. Corey Harris will probably handle those duties. Tight end Jason Dunn is out with a shoulder. Linebacker Lew Bush should be able to play despite a rib injury that had him added as questionable. Coach Dick Vermeil said Friday that Bush will start. Safeties Jason Belser (hip) and Greg Wesley (shoulder) are fine and will start.
Raiders right tackle Lincoln Kennedy will make the trip to Buffalo Friday, but the team won't know until game time whether or not he will play. Kennedy is suffering from lingering effects from a concussion suffered last week. A doctor cleared him to play if he feels up to it. It's probably 50-50. On Thursday, he sounded as though he might not be able to play. If he can't play, the Raiders will probably go with veteran Brad Badger at right tackle, but they have also given rookie Langston Walker a look at the starting right tackle job. Defensive tackle Roderick Coleman only has a chance to play on his sore knee and ankle. He's more doubtful than his questionable listing, but he wants to play in this game against Bills quarterback Drew Bledsoe. Running back Randy Jordan played last week on the groin injury that lists him as questionable and says he should be able to play this week. Right guard Mo Collins is getting a little more practice time coming off his knee surgery but he probably won't play. Matt Stinchcomb is doing a good job filling in for Collins. Kicker Sebastian Janikowski also made the trip despite being stopped by California Highway Patrol earlier this week for alleged drunken driving. Coach Bill Callahan said in a prepared statement that Janikowski will make the trip and will trip. He said he didn't know whether or not Janikowski is in the drug program. He called the issue unfortunate.
Chargers linebacker Junior Seau didn't practice Friday, and even though he's listed as probable, it will be a game-time decision whether he will play against the Broncos Sunday. Last week, Seau was probable for the Patriots game but even his teammates didn't think his ankle injury would allow him to play. Seau played despite the pain and was one of the keys in a victory over New England. Seau had to have the ankle put in a boot after the game. Linebacker Donnie Edwards will play despite a rib injury.

The Cowboys announced Friday that center Andre Gurode is out with a knee injury and will be replaced by Matt Lehr, who is only 298 pounds. The Cowboys like their centers big. That change affects the left guard position because the coaches wanted to rotate Lehr into the spot that is now occupied by Kelvin Garmon, who moved from right guard to left guard last week. Larry Allen is practicing on the sore ankle that required an MRI earlier this week. He will start at right tackle, but the question is how long he can last. Last week, Allen had problems. Wide receiver Joey Galloway will play despite a bruised thumb. Derek Ross, the rookie, will start at cornerback ahead of Duane Hawthorne, who has a hamstring injury and has lost his starting job to Ross. Linebacker Dat Nguyen remains out with a wrist injury.
Defensive tackle Keith Hamilton rested his groin injury most of the week but he will start and play against the Cowboys Sunday in Texas Stadium. Defensive end Kenny Holmes has been fitted with a brace for his elbow injury. He's practiced most of the week and will play. So will linebacker Dhani Jones, who has a hamstring injury. The Giants won't suit up tight end David Dinkens (foot), linebacker Nick Greisen (foot) and defensive tackle Matt Matrione (shoulder).
The Eagles had seven injured players who were inactive last Sunday. This Sunday they will have six -- defensive tackle Corey Simon (ankle), defensive end Derrick Burgess (foot), safety Michael Lewis (hamstring), guard John Welborne (broken leg), safety Rashard Cook (knee) and center Scott Peters (mono). Wide receiver Freddie Milons, who has been out with a leg injury, may be on the 53-man active roster this week for the game against the Jaguars.

The Bears upgraded wide receiver-returner Ahmad Merritt, who has been out with a broken hand. He goes from questionable to probable. That means that Vinny Sutherland, who was signed as a return specialist, won't play Monday night against the Packers. Guard Rex Tucker continues to practice despite an ankle injury and should be ready to start. Defensive end Phillip Daniels (ankle) and cornerback R.W. McQuarters (knee) won't play even though they remain listed as questionable. They aren't practicing. Tight end Fred Baxter is limited and questionable with his ankle injury.
Packers wide receiver Terry Glenn was upgraded from questionable to probable Friday. He's practiced most of the week and hopes to put his migraine headaches behind him. If he does, he will start against the Bears Monday night. The only Packers starter besides safety Antuan Edwards (arm) and defensive end Vonnie Holliday (chest) who didn't practice was tight end Bubba Franks, who has a knee injury but still has a chance to get healthy for Monday.

The Panthers almost lost tight end Wesley Walls for Sunday's game against the Cardinals because of a compound fracture of right ring finger suffered during Thursday's practice. Walls didn't practice Friday but coach John Fox said that Walls will play once he gets a small splint on the finger. The Panthers will be without wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad for a second week because of his hamstring injury. With trips coming up on turf fields in Dallas and Atlanta, it's not out of the question for Muhammad to miss a couple more games. Halfback DeShaun Foster is out with a knee. Fullback Nick Goings probably won't play because of his cracked ribs but that will be a gametime decision. The Panthers play the Cardinals.
Saints wide receiver Joe Horn was upgraded Thursday from questionable to probable and coach Jim Haslett said Friday he will start. That's important because the Saints will be without rookie Dante Stallworth for a couple of weeks with a pulled hamstring. Jerome Pathon and Horn, who suffered a minor knee injury last week, will be the starting receivers. Jake Reed will be the third. Michael Lewis will be the fourth. The Saints will be without starting defensive end Willie Whitehead, whose leg injury gives first-round choice Charles Grant the chance to start against the Steelers. Also out is cornerback Keyou Craver (knee). Linebacker James Allen (knee) and fullback Fred McAfee (hamstring) remain questionable. They took part in limited practices Friday.
After making a few roster moves earlier this week because of injuries, the Bucs will have 52 reasonably healthy players for Sunday's game against the Falcons. Right tackle Kenyatta Walker will miss Sunday's game and probably another week or two because of his ankle injury. Guard Kerry Jenkins is playing despite a broken leg. Halfback Aaron Stecker is probable with a sore back.

The Cardinals don't know what they have in the backfield. Even though he didn't practice Friday, Thomas Jones may start on his bad ankle, but no one knows how long he can play. Marcel Shipp practiced a little Friday but his knee injury gives him a less chance of playing. Damian Anderson will be activated from the practice squad and may either start or be the backup. Center Mike Gruttadauria didn't practice again Friday because of his bad back and sore knee but he is expected to start. Guard Chris Dishman practiced Friday after being limited Thursday because of a concussion. Left tackle L.J. Shelton will play despite a sore ankle. The Cardinals won't have tackle Anthony Clement (arm), running back Dennis McKinley (hamstring) and cornerback Duane Starks (groin).
The 49ers ruled halfback Paul Smith out of Sunday's game against the Rams because of a hamstring injury. He joins linebacker Jamie Winborn, who has a knee injury. Safety Ronnie Heard, who didn't practice Friday because of an ankle injury, was downgraded to doubtful and probably won't play. Linebacker Julian Peterson remains probable even though he didn't practice Friday on his sore knee and hip. Peterson got in some work during the week. If he can't play, the 49ers will have to reshuffle their linebacking corps and possibly use rookie Saleem Rasheed.
Rams cornerback Aeneas Williams hasn't done a lot in practice this week and will really push until kickoff time Sunday to see whether or not he could play against the Rams. Williams has started 177 consecutive games and has played 180 consecutive games. There is a chance he might not be able to start because of his toe and ankle injuries. He just hopes to play. If he can't start, Travis Fisher will fill in. The Rams already down without fullback James Hodgins (foot), quarterback Kurt Warner (finger), left tackle Orlando Pace (calf) and linebacker Tommy Polley (groin).
