Week 6: Injury updates around the NFL

By John Clayton

Here's the latest news on key injuries going into Week 6:

AFC East
Team Comment
The Bills aren't sure which tight end will handle their deep snapping duties Sunday -- Dave Moore or Jay Riemersma. Moore has a broken bone in his hand and won't know until game time whether he can snap. If not, Riemersma will handle those duties. Defensive end Chidi Ahanotu did some early work on his sore ankle Friday and thinks he will be able to play. He is listed as questionable. Defensive tackle Pat Williams should be able to play despite being listed as questionable because of sore ribs.
The Dolphins have scratched left tackle Mark Dixon for Sunday night's game against the Broncos because of an ankle injury. Marcus Spriggs gets his second start of the season. Coach Dave Wannstedt said that defensive end David Bowens practiced on his sore knee and should be able to see action. He has been listed as doubtful. Even linebacker Twan Russell, who's been out with a knee injury, could add some experience for the special teams. He has been listed as questionable.
The Patriots still have questions on their offensive line, and everyone might have to wait until gametime Sunday against the Packers to see who starts. Grey Ruegamer, who has been filling in at center, didn't practice Friday because of a foot injury and remains questionable. Mike Compton and Damien Woody continue to work at the guard positions. Tight end Daniel Graham didn't practice Friday and isn't expected to play. Wide receiver Troy Brown continues to practice on the sore knee that has kept him out for the past two games, but the Patriots aren't sure if he is going to play. Brown tested out the knee last Sunday against the Dolphins, but couldn't go. After Thursday's practice, Brown told friends that he felt 65 percent on Wednesday, but the knee had improved to about 85 percent by Thursday. A similar improvement by Sunday should allow Brown to return after missing two games. The gametime test will be the only way that Brown will know for sure whether or not he could play. Defensive ends Rick Lyle (back) and Anthony Pleasant (shoulder) practiced all week despite being questionable and should be able to play.

Ravens middle linebacker Ray Lewis (shoulder) is out for Sunday's game against the Colts. Defensive end Michael McCrary was ruled out because of his knee injury. Wide receiver Brandon Stokley was added to the injury list as questionable after suffering an ankle injury Thursday. Though Stokley thinks he can play, if he can't, the job will go to Ron Johnson. Fullback Alan Ricard was added Friday because of a thigh injury. He's questionable. Center Mike Flynn practiced on a limited basis despite an ankle injury. He's questionable, but he says he's optimistic that he will play.
Bengals coach Dick LeBeau is glad the Steelers game isn't played on Friday because he may not have linebacker Brian Simmons, who has a sore neck. With two extra days, though, LeBeau believes that Simmons will play Sunday's game against the Steelers. Simmons practiced Friday. Defensive end Vaughn Booker sat out Friday's practice with an ankle injury, but LeBeau expects him to play. He might even start. Out are tight end Sean Brewer (knee) and guard Mike Goff (leg).
It appears as though the Browns will have a secondary for Sunday's game against the Buccaneers. Safety Devin Bush (groin) and cornerback Corey Fuller (hamstring) practiced Friday. Each remains questionable, but the fact that Bush and Fuller practiced gives Browns coach Butch Davis hope. They need to play because strong safety Robert Griffith is out four to six weeks with a fractured bone in his shoulder. Defensive end Tyrone Rogers remains questionable because of a back injury. Earl Little is expected to start for Griffith. Tim Couch is the starting quarterback for the game against Bucs.
Steelers linebacker Kendrell Bell practiced Friday, giving him hope of returning to the starting lineup. Bell has missed most of the regular season because of an ankle injury. The Steelers play the Bengals. Running back Chris Fuamatu-Ma'afala (ribs) and deep snapper Mike Schneck (elbow) didn't practice and will sit out the game.

The Texans will be without tackles Ryan Young (groin) and Tony Boselli (shoulder), but they will have Ryan Schau back at guard. Schau, a left guard at the start of the season, will take over for rookie Fred Weary at left guard. Cornerback Jason Simmons is expected to play despite a hamstring injury that has him listed as questionable. Don't expect linebacker Erik Flowers (ankle) and wide receiver JaJuan Dawson (ankle) to play.

The Colts have ruled out strong safety Cory Bird (hip) and guard Rick DeMulling (ankle) for Sunday's game against the Ravens. Jason Doering will start at strong safety. Waverly Jackson will start at DeMulling's guard spot. Also out for the game is backup tight end Joe Dean Davenport, who is out for one or two months with a shoulder injury. Defensive tackle Josh Williams should finally return to the lineup. He's been out with a foot injury, but he was upgraded from questionable to probable Friday.
The Jaguars are in good shape for their trip to the Tennessee Titans. Linebacker Ed Thomas, mostly a special teamer, practiced on Friday and may be able to help on special teams. He's listed as questionable with a hamstring injury. Wide receiver Micah Ross, questionable with a hamstring injury, did limited work in practice and may also help on special teams. Defensive tackle Larry Smith will be back after missing a game with knee and ankle problems, but he has lost his starting job to first-round choice John Henderson, who had three sacks last week.
Titans coach Jeff Fisher is hoping that two days off of practice will help the ankle injury for middle linebacker Randall Godfrey, who is questionable for Sunday's game against the Jaguars. Frank Chamberlin worked in his spot. It will be a game-time decision for Godfrey. Tank Williams practiced Friday and appears ready to take back his job at safety. He'll start along Lance Schulters. John Thornton starts at end. Robaire Smith and Albert Haynesworth will share time at defensive tackle. Cornerback Mike Echols didn't practice Friday and remains questionable with a leg injury.

Broncos coach Mike Shanahan didn't have to spend much time talking about injuries following Friday's practice. He has five probables and none are expected to miss Sunday's game against the Dolphins. Wide receiver Rod Smith has practiced all week with a separated shoulder and will start. Fullback Mike Anderson will be back after missing a game with an ankle injury. His return, though, won't change the plan to get halfback Clinton Portis most of the carries.
Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil is leading toward signing veteran kicker Michael Husted to handle kickoffs because of the hamstring problems of Morten Andersen. Anderson didn't do much Friday, but Vermeil thinks he can handled field goals and extra points. Vermeil has until Saturday morning to make that roster decision. The Chiefs are at San Diego. Safety Greg Wesley looks doubtful to play Sunday because of the shoulder injury, Vermeil said. With Lyle West questionable with a hip, the Chiefs may start Shaunard Harts for Wesley. Tight end Jason Dunn is a week away from returning to the lineup. He's been out with a shoulder injury.
The Raiders held halfback Charlie Garner out of practice again Friday, but don't count him out for Sunday's game against the Rams. It will come down to how his hamstring checks out Sunday in St. Louis. The Raiders coaches equate Garner's situation to last year's playoff game against the Jets when Garner missed an entire week of work and came back to play. Last year's injury was an ankle. The caveat for the Raiders is how long they want to risk Garner to further injury. If the Raiders get a big lead on the Rams, don't be surprised if they rest injured players such as Garner, right tackle Lincoln Kennedy (concussion), left tackle Barry Sims (toe) and defensive tackle Sam Adams (knee). The coaches believe that they will have all of their questionable or probable players on the field Sunday, but they might take them out a little quicker than normal. Adams was added to the injury report Friday with a knee injury. With Rod Coleman questionable with a knee, the Raiders have to be careful with how they use Adams and Coleman. The iffiest player on the injury list is fullback Jon Ritchie, who is questionable with a foot injury. Halfback Travis Jervey was added to the injury report Friday as questionable with a calf injury.
The Chargers downgraded linebacker Junior Seau from probable to questionable after he sat out Friday's practice, but most observers believe he still will play against the Chiefs. Seau missed last Sunday's game against the Broncos. Strong safety Rodney Harrison practiced Friday despite a groin injury that has been nagging him for weeks. He will play. It doesn't look good for defensive end Marcellus Wiley, who has a groin injury and abdominal problem. Tight end Stephen Alexander and backup halfback Terrell Fletcher are expected to miss the game because of ankle injuries suffered last week.

The Cowboys could be down three offensive linemen for Sunday's game against the Panthers. There one hope is that right tackle Larry Allen (ankle) would play, but that looks very iffy. Allen took part in about half of the practice snaps Friday, but coach Dave Campo will wait until gametime to make the decision whether to play him. Center Andre Gurode (knee) and left guard Kelvin Garmon (hip) didn't practice again Friday and haven't practiced all week. Matt Lehr is expected to get his second start at center. Javiar Collins takes over at right tackle if Allen can't go, and the thought is that Allen might be in uniform for short-yardage and emergency duty. Marques McFadden, plucked off the Falcons practice squad, will start for Garmon. If that wasn't bad enough, the Cowboys have major problems in the secondary. Cornerback Mario Edwards has a thigh injury that has him questionable. He took part in limited work in practice Friday. Duane Hawthorne is expected to start for him. Safety Darren Woodson hasn't practiced this week because of a foot injury and will be replaced by Tony Dixon. With linebacker Dat Nguyen out with a wrist injury, the Cowboys are down six starters. The Cowboys may sign a safety off the practice squad Saturday because they also may not have Lynn Scott, who is questionable with a toe injury.
Giants inactive list for Sunday should go like this -- tight end Jeremy Shockey (toe), defensive end Kenny Holmes (elbow), cornerback Will Peterson (toe), guard Jason Whittle (back), tight end Darnell Dinkins (foot), linebacker Nick Greisen (foot) and defensive tackle Matt Mitrione (shoulder). Shockey, Holmes, Peterson and Whittle didn't practice for the third consecutive day. Although coach Jim Fassel doesn't have a rule that players who don't practice by Friday won't start, it doesn't look good for this quartet playing. Either Jason Sehorn or Ralph Brown will start for Peterson. Dusty Zeigler or Tam Hopkins will start for Whittle. Frank Ferrara will probably start for Holmes. Daniel Campbell gets the nod for Shockey. Unless the quarter wakes up healthy on Sunday, it is expected to miss the game against the Falcons.
Redskins halfback Stephen Davis worked in team and individual drills Friday and says that his knee is about 85 percent. That mean that he plans to play Sunday against the Saints. Coach Steve Spurrier made it official that Wilbert Brown will start for guard David Loverne, who is questionable with a quad injury. Loverne practiced Friday, but Brown will start. Linebacker LaVar Arrington is going to play despite a sore wrist.

The Lions should have all their banged up receivers playing Sunday expect rookie Eddie Drummond, who has an ankle injury. Even Desmond Howard, who's doubtful because of a neck injury, should be available. Bill Schroeder (ankle), Az-Zahir Hakim (toe) and Larry Foster (hip) all practiced Friday. They remain listed as questionable, but it appears that they will all play. The Lions are coming off a bye week and they play the Vikings. The big question remains whether defensive tackle Shaun Rogers will make his 2002 debut. He had a broken left thumb that sidelined him the first four games. There is about an 80 percent chance of him playing. Out is safety Brian Walker, who will be replaced by Lamar Campbell.
The Packers' secondary took a little step backward in trying to get healthy for Sunday's game against the Patriots. Strong safety Darren Sharper, who practiced Thursday after being listed as questionable because of a hamstring injury, was limited in Friday's work. Coach Mike Sherman will see how Sharper does Saturday to determine whether he will play. Cornerback Mike McKenzie, who missed last week's game with a groin injury, didn't practice Friday and becomes a little less likely to play. The Packers are already without safety Antuan Edwards (arm), defensive end Vonnie Holliday (torn pectoral muscle), defensive end Joe Johnson (arm) and cornerback Bhawoh Jue (hamstring).hamstring
The Vikings are in good shape for health following their bye week. Tight end Jim Kleinsasser will play, but probably not start at tight end. Hunter Goodwin will handle his role as the blocking tight end. Out are defensive tackle Talance Sawyer (knee) and linebackers Henri Crockett (elbow) and Lemanski Hall (ankle)

Falcons coach Dan Reeves decided Friday that injured quarterback Michael Vick will be the third quarterback for Sunday's game against the Giants. Vick is out because of right shoulder injury and will be replaced by Doug Johnson. Rookie Kurt Kittner is the backup. Reeves plans to start Warrick Dunn, but he wants to use more packages that get rookie T.J. Duckett on the field. Dunn and Duckett aren't getting enough touches a game. Guard Roberto Garza will be out because of a foot injury. Wide receiver Darrin Chiaverini won't play because of a quad injury that kept him out of practice all week. Linebacker John Thierry, who has been nagged most of the season with a hip injury, will be available but Sam Rogers continues to be the starter in his spot at outside linebacker.
Muhsin Muhammad practiced again Friday and appears to be ready to return to the lineup, but his starting status depends on the health of wide receiver Isaac Byrd, who has an abdominal strain. The plan would be for Muhammad to back up Byrd, but if Byrd can't play, Muhammad would start on the other side of Steve Smith. Cornerback Reggie Howard has been upgraded from doubtful to questionable, but his ankle injury will probably prevent him from playing. Emmanuel McDaniel is expected to get the start. Fullback Nick Goings practiced on a limited basis Friday because of his sore ribs, but he should be available. Tight end Wesley Walls will play with a splint on his right index finger, which suffered a compound fracture. He will start.
The Saints will be down five players for Sunday's game against the Redskins. Cornerback Keyou Craver (knee) and wide receiver Donté Stallworth (hamstring) didn't practice Friday and are expected to join linebacker Travis Carroll (leg) and defensive end Willie Whitehead (leg) on the inactive list. Fullback Fred McAfee is doubtful with a hamstring and didn't practice Friday.
Bucs safety John Lynch says that the next two days are crucial for him to continue his streak of playing 60 consecutive NFL games. Lynch was limited during Friday's practice because of a knee injury and remains questionable for Sunday's game against the Browns. Defensive tackle Anthony McFarland practiced Friday on the foot injury that leaves him questionable. There is a good chance that he will play. Coach Jon Gruden didn't announce whether Kenyatta Walker or Cornell Green will start at right tackle. Walker is back after suffering an ankle injury a couple weeks ago.

The The 49ers added wide receiver Terrell Owens to the injury report Friday as probable. He didn't practice because of a sore toe, but keeping him out of practice was only precautionary. The reason concern is wide receiver J.J. Stokes, who is questionable and didn't practice Friday because of a knee injury. He probably won't play and will have his stop taken over by Tai Streets. Safety Ronnie Heard (ankle), halfback Terry Jackson (thigh) and cornerback Ahmed Plummer (ankle) all practiced Friday and will play Monday against the Seahawks. The 49ers will be without halfback Paul Smith (hamstring) and linebacker Jamie Winborn (knee)
Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren said it would be a game-time decision whether he will play cornerback Shawn Springs, who is probable with a sprained foot. Springs took part in limited work Friday. The Seahawks play the 49ers Monday night. The defensive line is looking a lot healthier. Defensive tackle John Randle will play, but Holmgren isn't sure how many plays he will use him. Defensive end Brandon Mitchell, who's been out with a calf injury, should be available, too. He worked at left end Friday while Lamar King took the day off to rest a sore calf. Out are guard Steve Hutchinson (leg), tight end Jerramy Stevens (ankle) and linebacker Anthony Simmons (ankle)
All signs are pointing to the Rams starting Marc Bulger at quarterback against the Raiders, but Mike Martz made no official announcement Friday. Because of a knee that required draining Thursday, Jamie Martin was only able to do a little bit of work on the field Friday. That little bit of work kept him eligible to play, but Bulger has handled almost all of the work this week. It will be a game-time decision on cornerback Aeneas Williams, who missed last week's game on a turf toe. Williams had been working a little bit this week. Out are quarterback Kurt Warner (hand), tackle Orlando Pace (calf) and halfback James Hodgins (foot). Back are linebacker Tommy Polley (groin) and cornerback Dexter McCleon (hamstring)
