| JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots have received permission to interview Jaguars defensive coordinator Dom Capers for their head-coaching vacancies.
Capers, the former head coach of the Carolina Panthers, spearheaded the resurgence of the Jacksonville defense, lifting the Jaguars from 25th to fourth in the NFL in yardage allowed. "He did an outstanding job; he's an outstanding football coach," said Jaguars coach Tom Coughlin, who granted the teams permission to interview Capers. "He's an old-fashioned, back-room guy. He spends long hours and gives lengthy, meticulous presentations. He's got a good, solid coaching and teaching demeanor. "Players like Dom. He's just a good football coach and a good guy." Coughlin, however, was not completely resigned to losing Capers, who would be the fourth coordinator to leave Jacksonville in five years. "I'm not telling you we're losing him," Coughlin said. "In this business, you have to be very, very sure of what you're getting into."
The Saints are conducting a series of interviews this week.
Reportedly on the list are Capers, Broncos offensive coordinator
Gary Kubiak, Giants defensive coordinator John Fox, Falcons
offensive line coach Art Shell and Steelers defensive coordinator Jim Haslett. | ALSO SEE Capers interviews with Patriots Patriots get permission to interview Belichick Saints interview coaches Kubiak, Fox, McGinnis; Mueller offered GM job ![]() | |||||
