Capers interviews with Patriots

Associated Press

FOXBORO, Mass. -- The New England Patriots on Wednesday interviewed Jacksonville defensive coordinator Dom Capers for their head coaching position.

Capers compiled a 31-35 record as coach of the Carolina Panthers from 1995 to 1998, the franchise's first four seasons, and took them to the NFC championship Game in their second year.

He had been scheduled to interview with New England on Tuesday, but the meeting was postponed because of a snowstorm that blanketed the East Coast.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers director of operations Tom Donahoe interviewed for the general manager's job Tuesday. Donahoe and Capers worked together in Pittsburgh from 1992-95 when Capers was defensive coordinator and Donahue was director of football operations.

The Patriots have also interviewed defensive coordinators Marvin Lewis of Baltimore, Willie Shaw of Oakland and Steve Sidwell of New England and offensive coordinator Gary Crowton of Chicago.

"There's no one else scheduled at this time," Patriots spokesman Stacey James said. "There's no timetable for the hiring."

The Patriots also want to interview former New York Jets assistant Bill Belichick to replace Pete Carroll.
