Lewis promoted to offensive coordinator

Associated Press

ALLEN PARK, Mich. -- Sherman Lewis was promoted Monday to offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. He also will coach the wide receivers.

Lewis replaces Maurice Carthon, who left to work as offensive coordinator under Bill Parcells in Dallas. He also replaces fired receivers coach Larry Kirksey.

Lewis served as special offensive assistant with the Lions last season. He has been offensive coordinator at Green Bay and Minnesota.

Defensive coordinator Kurt Schottenheimer also will be the defensive backs coach.

Carthon also was the running backs coach. Former Michigan State head coach Bobby Williams filled that position Friday.

The Lions also said assistant George Dyer will coach the defensive line; Charles Haley will move from defensive line coach to special projects; John Marshall will switch from assisting Haley to coaching the linebackers; and Ray Horton will move from the secondary to replace retired Richard Selcer in coaching the nickel defense.
