White hadn't been told whether he had a concussion. He had an MRI test and X-rays Monday, and the Browns were awaiting results. White was carted off the field Sunday after taking a hard hit during a blitz drill. On Saturday, he was slow getting up after being hit by three or four defenders on a running play. The versatile fourth-year back, who ran for 470 yards and caught 63 passes last season, continued to practice after Saturday's blow. "But yesterday, I stopped," he said. "I'm not going to practice if I don't feel right. I'm not going to do anything to threaten my career. I'm not going to push it." White said his head struck the ground "pretty hard" after he was hit on Sunday. He complained of dizziness to team trainers, and said he was still a little shaky after reporting for work Monday. He said he'll stay out until doctors give him the OK, and until he passes his own tests. "If I feel like I'm still rocking back and forth, I'm not going out there," said White, who got a four-year contract with a $1.3 million signing bonus last month. "I'm cautious. I need my brain."
Lewis, who broke the NFL record for combined kickoff and punt return yardage last season, was taken off the field on a stretcher after running into safety Mel Mitchell. "It was a precaution,'' trainer Scottie Patton said. "With the way the injury occurred, we decided to transport for further evaluation." Although Lewis was in some pain, the injury was not thought to be serious. "He is going to be fine," coach Jim Haslett said. "We are just going to have to see how he is. He will probably have a couple of days off." Lewis, who never played college football, was working as a beer truck delivery man when he earned a spot on the Saints' practice squad in 2000 because of his speed. He overcame problems catching the football and earned a trip to the Pro Bowl last year. He became the first Saints player to return a punt and a kickoff for a touchdown in the same game. Lewis also finished third on the team with 18 tackles on coverage units and forced a fumble.
Brown, the Titans' third-round pick out of Colorado, fell to the ground at the end of a running play Sunday. Coach Jeff Fisher said the results of an MRI on Monday showed significant damage to the muscle, but they hope Brown can return by the end of the preseason.
"It's obviously not going to require surgery. We're going to begin treating him very aggressively now,'' Fisher said. "We're looking at a couple of weeks at least. He's not had a hamstring history before. We haven't had him around. We don't know what kind of healer he is.''
Fisher said Brown's injury is similar to what strong safety Tank Williams had in camp last year. Williams missed most of camp but played in the Titans' final preseason game and started every game last season.
Brown, who entered the NFL draft after his junior season, was third in the nation last season with 1,841 yards rushing and 19 touchdowns.
Massive excavation of the 26-foot deep hole needed for the foundation will last several weeks. The site sits on 165 acres in Glendale along the Loop 101. It will be south of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey arena, which opens in December. The football stadium will be finished in August 2006. |
