Raiders are best in strong AFC West

ESPN.com

Who will make the playoffs from the AFC West?

Mark Schlereth
Raiders
It's a toss-up. Each of the four teams will be in the race until the final week of the season. After Denver's loss to Baltimore, Oakland looks like the class of the division, along with the Chargers. I don't think a wild-card team will come out of the AFC West. Because every team is good, they will spend so much time beating each other up that there may not be a wild card. I have always questioned the Raiders' age. If they are fresh and continue to play the way they are playing, they will be the strongest team.

Andrea Kremer
Raiders, Broncos
Oakland will win the division. The question is whether or not the Raiders will go through their typical end-of-the-season swoon. They have a good influsion of young talent to go with the veterans. The AFC West is too deep to not send one as a wild card. Even though the Chargers have looked tremendous, it's hard for me to pick them until we see how they do in divisional play. At this point, I would stay with Denver as a wild-card team. If Brian Griese gets hurt, I like Steve Beuerlein as a backup. Clinton Portis should get better, and they have depth at running back. In San Diego, if LaDainian Tomlinson got hurt, you could kiss the Chargers' season goodbye.

Merril Hoge
Raiders, Chargers
Before this season the Raiders' weakness was their defense. Their offense is still as efficient as any in football, but now it is getting help from the other side of the ball. And special teams has been an added plus for them. San Diego's defense has been rock-solid for years, but it has always faded around midseason because it has gotten no help from the offense. The Chargers' defense needed an offense that could control the game, something they can now do under Marty Schottenheimer. Because the defense will play fewer snaps than in the past, I expect the defense to get better late in the season.

Mark Malone
Raiders, Broncos
It's likely that we'll see two teams come out of the West -- Denver and Oakland. One of the wild cards will probably come from the West. The 4-0 Chargers are a good, solid team, but I still think they're a year away from the playoffs.

Sean Salisbury
Raiders, Chargers
The Raiders are the best team in the AFC West, which is by far the best division in football. It isn't even close. Three teams, and maybe four, will be good enough to make the playoffs. But because each conference has only two wild-card teams this season instead of three, only two teams will come from the AFC West -- the division winner and one wild card. It will be too difficult to send three teams. It will come down to whether the Broncos can handle the Chargers or whether the Chargers can handle the Broncos. Although the Broncos have more talent, I have to pick the Chargers as the second team, considering how they are playing now.

Mike Golic
Raiders, Chargers
This is no disrespect to Kansas City or Denver. And who knows -- three could go from the AFC West. That would be unbelievable. But I think Oakland will win the division, and San Diego will be a wild-card team. "Marty Ball" is a good way to win games. The Chargers have a tough defense with standout players on all levels -- from Marcellus Wiley to Junior Seau to Rodney Harrison. And I like their running game with LaDainian Tomlinson. The Chargers are not a fluke.
