John Clayton's best free-agent signings of all time |
 |
1 |
Reggie White, DE, Packers (1993)
Clayton's take: The Minister of Defense put the Packers back on the NFL map and convinced other players around the league that Green Bay was a good place for football and a good place for winning. |
 |
2 |
Deion Sanders, CB, 49ers (1994), Cowboys (1995)
Clayton's take: Prime Time was a defender who turned good defenses into Super Bowl teams. His coverage skills allowed defensive coordinators the luxury of not worrying about passes thrown on his side of the field, so they could be free to blitz on the other side of the field. |
 |
3 |
Keenan McCardell, WR, Jaguars (1996)
Clayton's take: He developed into a top receiving threat that made it easy for Mark Brunell to develop as a quarterback. His ability to consistently catch passes along with Jimmy Smith made the Jaguars' offense formidable. |
 |
4 |
Chad Brown, LB, Seahawks (1997)
Clayton's take: The Seahawks stunned the league by making him the first $4 million free-agent linebacker, but he gave the Seahawks a linebacker who could chase players all over the field. The Chargers have that with Junior Seau and the Ravens with Ray Lewis. |
 |
5 |
Steve Beuerlein, QB, Panthers (1996)
Clayton's take: It seemed like a minor signing, but he played at a Pro Bowl level for more than two years. Though George Seifert is giving up on him this season and is trying to trade him, Beuerlein, who bounced from team to team waiting for his chance, finally established himself as one of the great free-agent late-bloomers. |
