Marchment's former team smarting

  RECAP | BOX SCORE

EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- San Jose defenseman Bryan Marchment isn't know for his scoring touch.

But the Sharks will remember the offensive contribution Marchment made Sunday night.

Todd Harvey
Sharks winger Todd Harvey leaves with a head laceration after falling at the end of a second-period fight with Jason Smith.

Marchment's goal with 3:39 left in the third period capped a three-goal comeback as the San Jose Sharks rallied to tie the Edmonton Oilers 3-3 on Sunday night.

Marchment, a former Oiler, floated a shot over the right shoulder of Edmonton goalie Tommy Salo and the Sharks extended their unbeaten streak to three games (2-0-1-0).

Marchment defended his offensive skills.

"It's nothing new, I've got some skills," Marchment said. "I've been jumping into the rush a little more this year, trying to contribute as much as I can offensively while not forgetting about doing what I have to do defensively."

Tom Poti and Chad Kilger scored in the first period, and Anson Carter scored in the second as Edmonton built a three-goal lead.

San Jose's Patrick Marleau scored at 7:57 of the second period and Owen Nolan scored 1:45 into the third as the Sharks closed within a goal.

Poti opened the scoring 7:42 into the first period. He took a pass at his own blue line, moved past Mike Rathje and beat Sharks goalie Steve Shields.

Kilger made it 2-0 at 9:04, lifting a rebound over Shields.

Carter extended the lead to 3-0 with Edmonton on a two-man advantage 1:13 into the second frame. Shields stopped shots by Doug Weight and Ryan Smyth, but Carter swept a rebound into an open net.

Weight's assist on the goal extended his points streak to seven games.

Marleau lifted a shot over Salo's right shoulder and Nolan made it 3-2 by bouncing a shot off Edmonton defenseman Eric Brewer.

"Considering the way we played in the first two periods, definitely, one point is huge for us," San Jose's Jeff Friesen said. "If they were fresh, we probably wouldn't have been able to come back like this."

Nolan has 11 points in six games since missing 10 games with a sore abdomen.

Vincent Damphousse extended his scoring streak to 10 games with an assist on Nolan's goal.

"We lost our aggressiveness and tried to sit back way too much in the third," said Oilers coach Craig MacTavish. "We were passive. We lost our legs and they took it to us. The third period was a product of us sitting back."
