BOX SCORE
EDMONTON, Alberta (AP) -- The Edmonton Oilers keep needing to put
it additional work to finish their games.
Doug Weight beat Jose Theodore with a wrist shot 1:49 into
overtime -- the Oilers' fifth extra-period game in six outings -- as
Edmonton beat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 on Saturday night.
| | | Doug Weight's overtime goal capped the Oilers' rally vs. the Canadiens on Saturday. Edmonton erased a two-goal deficit to force the extra session. |
Weight picked up the puck near the boards, deked around
defenseman Patrice Brisebois and fired a shot over Theodore's
shoulder.
"They got a couple of goals but we battled hard to get back
into it," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "We didn't want to
come out of it without getting two points. We're fortunate that
Dougie took care of that business at the end."
Igor Ulanov and Rem Murray scored in the second period as the
Oilers overcame a two-goal deficit. Brian Savage scored two
power-play goals for Montreal.
Edmonton has won twice, tied twice and lost once in its recent
string of overtime games.
The Canadiens are 1-9-2 in December.
Savage opened the scoring 4:17 into the first period,
redirecting Saku Koivu's centering pass into an open net.
Savage made it 2-0 when Francis Bouillon's shot from the point
hit the Montreal forward's skate and trickled behind goalie Tommy
Salo. Savage leads the Canadiens with 12 goals.
"Obviously, we started the game really well," Savage said.
"We got undisciplined and they definitely got the momentum. It's a
good point for us on the road, but it's definitely a little
disappointing to be up two and have them come back like that."
Ulanov scored in a power play at 15:34 of the second period,
one-timing Weight's cross-ice pass past Theodore. Murray tied the
game 43 seconds later.
Game notes
Mike Comrie played his first NHL game just hours after
signing a three-year contract with the Oilers. The 5-foot-10,
180-pound center was the Oilers' fourth-round pick in the 1999
entry draft out of Michigan. The Oilers were unable to sign Comrie
during training camp, and he joined the WHL's Kootenay Ice in
Cranbrook, British Columbia, where he led the league in scoring
with 39 goals and 40 assists in 37 games.
