ST. LOUIS (AP) -- The San Jose Sharks made the most of their few
opportunities against the St. Louis Blues.
| | | Blues goalie Roman Turek makes a save as Al MacInnis checks the Sharks' Mike Ricci. | The Sharks were outshot 31-14, but defenseman Brad Stuart scored
1:51 into overtime to give San Jose a 4-3 victory on Saturday
night.
"We gave ourselves a chance to win, that's all you can do on
the road," Stuart said.
Owen Nolan, Gary Suter and Stephane Matteau also scored for San
Jose, which extended its road unbeaten streak to six (4-0-2).
Daniel Corso, Jamal Mayers and Scott Young scored for St. Louis,
which had its home winning streak stopped at three. It was also the
first time the Blues lost in 30 games when they took a lead into
the third period.
"We needed a save, and (Blues goaltender Roman Turek) wasn't
great tonight," St. Louis coach Joel Quenneville said.
The Blues could not clear the puck from their own zone, and
Stuart blasted a shot past Turek for the win.
"Once I looked up and saw (Turek) sliding, I decided to
shoot," Stuart said. "Somehow it found its way through."
Blues defenseman Al MacInnis left in the third period after
taking a high stick from San Jose's Scott Hannan. MacInnis received
stitches to his left eyelid, and did not return.
"Al getting cut definitely was a big break for us," San Jose
coach Darryl Sutter said. "All we did was kind of hang in there
and we got the breaks to win."
St. Louis hopes to put the loss behind them and convert its
chances. But the loss was tough especially after more than
doubling San Jose's shots.
"If we're going to sit and dwell on this game, it's only going
to hamper us in the future," Blues forward Reed Low said.
Nolan's 18th of the season tied it 3-3 on a power play 3:49 into
the third.
Suter's power-play goal at 10:04 of the first gave San Jose a
1-0 lead. The shot deflected off St. Louis forward Craig Conroy and
went into the net.
Corso tied it with a power-play goal at 19:09 of the first. A
shot by MacInnis got behind Sharks goalie Steve Shields, and Corso
jammed it into the net for his fourth of the season.
Mayers scored at 5:49 of the second to give St. Louis a 2-1
lead.
San Jose came right back and tied it at 9:57 of the period when
Matteau got behind the Blues defense, took a pass from Marco Sturm
and beat Turek.
"The second period was really tough. They dominated us, but we
got great goaltending, hung around and won," Suter said.
Young scored a power-play goal at 12:08 of the second to give
St. Louis a 3-2 lead.
Game notes Saturday's game was the first between the teams at Savvis
since the Sharks upset the Blues in the first round of last year's
playoffs. ... Turek has a 7-2-1 regular-season record against San
Jose. ... San Jose has won all 15 games which it has led after
three periods. ... Suter's goal extended his point-scoring streak
to four games.
