'Hawks drop fourth in last six games

RECAP | BOX SCORE

PHOENIX (AP) -- Sean Burke's recent play is good news for the Phoenix Coyotes.

Burke stopped 25 shots to lead the Coyotes to a 3-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on Sunday night.

Burke's effort came on the heels of a 2-0 shutout of Edmonton Friday night.

"We're striving for consistency now," said Burke (20-13-10). "We have to put some wins together to put some distance between us and the last playoff spot. Otherwise, we'll be fighting until the 82nd game to get into the playoffs."

Mike Sullivan, Travis Green and Jeremy Roenick scored for the Coyotes, who had a loss and a tie in two previous games against Chicago this season.

Tony Amonte and Eric Daze had goals for the Blackhawks, who lost their second straight and fourth in six games.

"We controlled most of the game, and they were a little bit lucky on their goals," Chicago coach Alpo Suhonen said. "Burke played unbelievably well."

Amonte got his 28th goal of the season 2:34 into the third to get Chicago within one, 2-1. Daze had the puck behind the Coyotes' net and slipped a pass to Amonte, who extended his scoring streak to six games.

Roenick scored an unassisted goal with 53 seconds left to make it 3-1, but Daze scored just 19 seconds later. But the Coyotes held on for their second straight win.

"It was a sloppy game here and there at times," Roenick said. "Both teams were tired. A win is a win is a win is a win. We need some points."

Sullivan scored at 9:45 of the first period when Mika Alatalo picked up a rebound of his own shot in the middle of the right circle and slid a pass across the slot to Sullivan, who was positioned right in front of Chicago goalie Jocelyn Thibault.

Green's goal came with 3:02 left in the second. Landon Wilson took a pass from Brad May on the other side of the crease and flipped the puck to Green. It was Green's first goal in his last 24 games. He was benched for the slump against Edmonton.

Chicago had a 5-on-3 advantage for 41 seconds starting at 6:00 of the third, but Burke made a diving stop on the Blackhawks' only shot.

Game notes
Phoenix activated right wing Shane Doan on Sunday. Doan had missed five games with an abdominal strain. To make room for Doan, the Coyotes waived defenseman Chris Joseph. If Joseph clear waivers by Wednesday, he will be optioned to the Coyotes' AHL affiliate in Springfield, Mass. Joseph played in 24 games with the Coyotes, registering a goal and an assist. ... The Coyotes played without top goal scorer Keith Tkachuk, who sprained an ankle in a victory over Edmonton on Friday. Tkachuk is listed as day-to-day. ... The Blackhawks concluded an eight-game road trip (2-5-1) with Sunday night's game.
