Zubov's goal gives Stars 3-3 tie

RECAP | BOX SCORE

DALLAS (AP) – The slumping Dallas Stars are looking to start a streak that would push them up the Western Conference standings.

They think the point from Sunday night's 3-3 tie with the Central Division-leading St. Louis Blues might provide that spark.

Mike Modano
Mike Modano slips the puck past Roman Turek to give Dallas a 1-0 first-period lead.

Sergei Zubov scored Dallas' third power-play goal of the game with 11:36 left in regulation as the Stars rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 3-3 tie.

"To come back from 3-1 against this team is excellent," Stars coach Ken Hitchcock said. "St. Louis is on a roll, they play a terrific team game, so for us it's a good tie."

The Stars bounced back from Friday night's 2-1 home loss to expansion Minnesota, but Dallas is only 2-4-1 in its last seven games.

"It was a good rebound game," said Stars center Mike Modano, who had a goal and an assist. "In the past, we've been good at regrouping after bad games. This was a good comeback against a good team."

St. Louis, 3-1-3 in its last seven games, had the best scoring opportunity 30 seconds into overtime, but Scott Young's shot hit the goalpost.

An overtime victory over Dallas coupled with Saturday night's 4-3 overtime win at Colorado would have been a major confidence boost for the Blues.

"It's too bad, but I had a chance," Young said. "It definitely would have made it a great weekend."

The Blues came back from a 1-0 deficit behind consecutive second-period goals by Pierre Turgeon, Scott Mellanby and Jochen Hecht to take a 3-1 lead.

Mellanby was acquired in a trade with the Florida Panthers on Friday and was making his Blues debut.

But Dallas got close on a power-play goal from Joe Nieuwendyk at 16:21 of the second. Zubov tied it at 3 with his seventh goal of the season on a slap shot from the right point that got past Blues goalie Roman Turek, the former Stars backup, who was screened on the play.

Turek, who had missed the three previous games with an elbow injury, finished with 20 saves, but allowing three power-play goals took some of the luster off of the tie.

"The Stars are tough on the power play," Turek said. "They have two guys in front of the net to cause deflections. It's very hard to stop shots when you're screened."

Dallas got the only goal of the first when Modano scored on a power play at 4:36. Modano skated in from the left side and jammed the puck past a fallen Turek for his 18th goal.

St. Louis tied it at 1 on Turgeon's 24th goal at 2:02 of the second on a shot from the right circle that got through the pads of Dallas' Ed Belfour.

The Blues went ahead 3:29 later when Mellanby converted a 3-on-2 rush with a shot from the slot.

Hecht added his 15th goal at 9:48 of the second off a breakaway while the Stars were on a power play to extend the Blues' lead to 3-1.

The Blues are still without injured defensemen Chris Pronger (knee) and Al MacInnis (eye).

"It's just been a tough stretch with all the injuries," Blues coach Joel Quenneville said. "But we're good at overcoming obstacles."

Game notes
The Stars activated right wings Mike Keane and Jamie Langenbrunner from injured reserve. ... The Blues activated defenseman Sean Hill, who had missed 32 games due to an abdominal strain. To make room for Hill, the Blues returned rookie defenseman Dale Clarke to their American League farm team in Worcester. ... St. Louis lost left wing Tyson Nash to a knee injury in the first when he was checked by Nieuwendyk. Nash will be evaluated Monday in St. Louis. ... Belfour was credited with an assist on Modano's goal – Belfour's first of the season and 22nd of his career.
