Red Wings erase 3-0 deficit

RECAP | BOX SCORE

DETROIT (AP) – Sergei Fedorov's second goal of the game, scored with 2:09 left in overtime, gave the Detroit Red Wings a come-from-behind 4-3 victory Wednesday night over the Carolina Hurricanes.

Kirk Maltby's goal at 4:43 of the second period completed Detroit's comeback from a 3-0 deficit.

Chris Osgood
Chris Osgood made 38 saves in Detroit's overtime win vs. the Hurricanes.

Fedorov's game-winner came on a power play after the Hurricanes were caught with too many men on the ice 1:53 into overtime.

Fedorov, who also had an assist, scored on a slap shot from the right circle.

Glen Wesley had a goal and two assists and Rod Brind'Amour added three assists for Carolina.

Carolina led 3-0 a little past the midway point of the second period after power-play goals by defensemen Wesley and Kevin Hatcher.

Wesley's goal came just 1:49 into the second with Nicklas Lidstrom still serving a hooking penalty he received with 5.8 seconds left in the first period.

Wesley's slap shot just inside the blue line beat Red Wings goalie Chris Osgood low on the short side after it dipped.

After the Red Wings were caught with too many men on the ice, Hatcher tipped Wesley's screened back-hander from the top of the right circle past Osgood.

But the Red Wings scored twice in a span of 2:13 to take a 3-2 lead into the third period.

Fedorov got his 26th goal of the season when he tipped in a pass from Brendan Shanahan at 13:21 and Detroit got a power-play goal at 15:35 when Martin Lapointe put in a loose puck in the crease.

The Hurricanes took a 1-0 advantage late in the first period with a power-play goal. With Todd Gill off for interference, Bates Battaglia poked a rebound over Osgood with just 50 seconds left in the period.

Game notes
The Red Wings have beaten the Hurricanes franchise 11 consecutive times at Joe Louis Arena, dating to Nov. 14, 1989, when the team was the Hartford Whalers. ... The contest matched two of the NHL's career leading scorers. Carolina's Ron Francis is fifth on the point list with 1,605 and Detroit's Steve Yzerman is sixth with 1,594.
