Hot Senators extend lead over Leafs

RECAP | BOX SCORE

TORONTO (AP) -- The Toronto Maple Leafs eliminated the Ottawa Senators in the playoffs last year, but the addition of Alexei Yashin makes that less likely if the teams meet again.

Ottawa Senators center Alexei Yashin celebrates a short-handed goal during the win over Toronto.

Yashin scored twice, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Senators beat the Maple Leafs 3-2 Saturday night.

Yashin, who missed last season in a contract dispute, has nine goals and 10 assists in his past 13 games. Toronto eliminated Ottawa in six games in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals.

"They're a good hockey club, and Yashin adds that dimension that they didn't have last year," Toronto goalie Curtis Joseph said. "He's really good."

Just 42 seconds into extra time, Yashin stopped in front of defenseman Dmitry Yushkevich and fired a wrist shot over the shoulder of Joseph.

"He held on to it as long as he could," Joseph said. "I played it well, but Yashin made a great shot."

Todd White also scored for the Senators, who won all four games against Toronto this season.

Mats Sundin and Steve Thomas scored for the Maple Leafs, who are 12 points behind Ottawa for first-place in the Northeast division.

"It's something special when you play against Toronto or Montreal," Yashin said. "They're probably the biggest games of the year. The fans get so excited."

Joseph made 39 saves.

Ottawa's Patrick Lalime stopped 27 shots.

Sundin scored a power-play goal at 2:33 of the first after defenseman Tomas Kaberle faked a shot and passed to Jonas Hoglund, who set up Sundin in front.

After Kaberle turned the puck over, Yashin scored on breakaway at 14:14 of the first.

White made it 2-1 for Ottawa by tipping in Wayne Redden's shot for the point at 5:56 of the second.

But Sundin made a nice drop pass for Thomas, whose one-timer beat Lalime at 18:47.

Game notes
