CALGARY, Alberta (AP) -- Calgary Flames center Marc Savard ended
a slump in dramatic style Saturday night.
| | | St. Louis Blues goalie Roman Turek juggles the puck as Calgary's Clark Wilm looks on. |
Savard's 21st goal of the season on a breakaway at 4:01 of
overtime gave the Flames a 3-2 win over the St. Louis Blues.
Dave Lowry's perfect lead pass sent Savard in alone on a
breakaway against goaltender Roman Turek.
"I've been in a slump lately, so I was going to just shoot, but
Turek looked huge as I was coming in there and I thought, `Geez,
there's no room,' " said Savard.
Calgary tied the game 2-2 at 8:18 of the third period on rookie
defenseman Toni Lydman's first goal. A shot by Jeff Shantz was
deflected to the side and Lydman squeezed a backhander between the
post and Turek.
"It was such a great feeling to see that puck go in the net,"
said Lydman. "Then to win the game in overtime, that made it
perfect."
Clarke Wilm, with his first goal in 33 games, also scored for
Calgary.
The win gave Calgary two badly needed points as the Flames try
to keep their faint playoff hopes alive. With 18 games remaining,
Calgary trails idle Edmonton by 11 points for the eighth and final
playoff spot in the Western Conference.
"We can't focus on anybody else, we've just got to get our
wins," said Savard. "Worrying about the teams in front of us and
not winning our own games isn't going to do us any good."
Scott Young scored his 34th and 35th goals of the season for St.
Louis. Young has eight goals in his last eight games.
The Blues, again playing without a trio of all-stars due to
injury -- Chris Pronger (wrist), Al MacInnis (eye), and Pavol
Demitra (leg) -- have lost seven in a row on the road, the last two
in overtime.
"In the last two games we feel we've outplayed the other team,
but it's just not showing on the scoreboard," said Young. "It's
real disappointing to lose in overtime, even if we do still get a
point."
St. Louis moved into a tie with Detroit for top spot in the
Central Division. The Red Wings lost in Los Angeles.
"We got a lead in the third but we gave it up and anything can
happen in overtime," said Blues coach Joel Quenneville. "Right
now we'll take the point as we're having trouble winning on the
road. At least we got something out of it."
Young gave the Blues a 2-1 with 4:45 left in the second period.
With Calgary on a power play, Young moved deep into the Flames'
zone and ripped a rising slapshot past goaltender Fred Brathwaite.
It was Young's third short-handed goal of the season and 15th
overall for the Blues, which leads the NHL.
St. Louis opened the scoring 9:56 into the game on a power-play
when Young's slapshot from the blue-line beat a screened
Brathwaite.
Calgary replied just 18 seconds later.
Turek left his net to play the puck around the boards, but it
was intercepted by Wilm, who found the open net with a wrist shot
from the sharp angle. It was Wilm's first goal since Dec. 9.
Game notes St. Louis right-winger Pavol Demitra (leg laceration)
missed his 11th game in a row. Demitra is expected back anytime.
... Twenty of Scott Young's 34 goals have come on the road. ... St.
Louis dropped to 4-7-3-1 in games in which neither Chris Pronger
nor Al MacInnis are in the lineup. ... Calgary and Nashville are
the only two NHL teams with a winning record on the road and a
losing record at home.
