Joseph's 37 saves stonewall Senators again

RECAP | BOX SCORE

OTTAWA (AP) – Curtis Joseph has backed the favored Ottawa Senators into a playoff corner.

Curtis Joseph sprawls to the ice to make one of his 37 saves.

Joseph made 37 saves for his second shutout in less than 24 hours, and Gary Roberts scored twice as the Toronto Maple Leafs beat the Senators 3-0 on Saturday night to take a 2-0 lead in the first-round series.

On Friday night, Joseph stopped 36 shots as Toronto opened the Eastern Conference series with a 1-0 victory on Mats Sundin's overtime goal. Game 3 is Monday night in Toronto. "We haven't won anything yet," said Joseph, who extended his playoff shutout streak against Ottawa to 166 minutes, 50 seconds. He has 11 career shutouts in the playoffs.

"Momentum is on our side now and we want to keep it going as long as we can. It's a good start, for sure. You've got to feel good about yourself right now. But we're still a long way from closing out the series."

Sergei Berezin added a goal for the Maple Leafs, who beat the Senators in six games in the first round last year.

Ottawa, the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, has lost its last 10 road games in the playoffs over three seasons, including three in Toronto last year.

"We're doing the things to get a lot of good scoring chances," Ottawa captain Daniel Alfredsson said. "I had a good chance and the puck stood on end on me. It's bounces. Maybe we're squeezing the stick a little tight, but we can't get down."

Berezin opened the scoring 2:49 into the game, beating goalie Patrick Lalime with a shot from the blue line.

"It was a tough start, but we didn't find a way to score, either," Lalime said. "But we've still got a chance. We've got a good team and we're still confident. We've just got to find a way to score."

Roberts got his own pass back off Ottawa defenseman Wade Redden's skate and jammed in a goal at 9:15 of the second.

Roberts intercepted rookie Karel Rachunek's pass behind the net and beat Lalime at 7:12 of the third period.

The Senators were 0-for-5 on the power play, leaving them 0-for-11 in the series.

For the second straight night, Senators star Alexei Yashin was smothered by the tight-checking Shayne Corson. Yashin also was blanked in Ottawa's first-round playoff loss to Buffalo in 1999. He missed last season during a contract holdout. "Our chances have been very good, but the puck just doesn't want to go in," Yashin said.

Game notes
There were no lineup changes. Garry Valk and Dave Manson were scratched for Toronto, while Magnus Arvedsson, Radek Bonk and Chris Phillips sat out with injuries for Ottawa.
