Detroit coach says Shanahan a Team Canada pick

Red Wings winger Brendan Shanahan will be selected to the Canadian Olympic team, Detroit coach Scotty Bowman told the Detroit Free Press.

"He is already on the team," Bowman told the paper. "They told me last week."

Shanahan told the Free Press after practice on Wednesday that he had not hear from Team Canada officials. The Canadian roster will be announced Saturday at 12:30 p.m. ET at the Hockey Hall of Fame.

"As far as I know," he said, "they haven't picked the team yet."

Bowman's statement was in response to Shanahan objecting to being publicly criticized by Bowman, who said the winger was outplayed by Jarome Iginla in Monday night's 4-2 loss at Calgary. Bowman said Shanahan, who has seen reduced ice time and limited duty on special teams, "will have to get ready for 12 minutes a game" with Team Canada.

Edmonton Oilers general manager Kevin Lowe, who serves as the assistant director of Team Canada, told the Edmonton Journal that Bowman was being premature.

"I don't know where Scotty is getting this from, certainly nobody on the selection committee," Lowe said. "Nobody is on the team yet, except for the eight guys picked early, and I can honestly say we won't finalize the team until after were have a conference call (Thursday) and we talk about all the names.

"Sure, Shanahan is one of the favorites, but I can truthfully say he hasn't been told he's on. Nobody has, except for the first eight. Nobody's going to find out until Saturday morning."
