NEW YORK -- Calgary's Jarome Iginla, who led the NHL in goals and points this season, and goalies Patrick Roy of Colorado and Jose Theodore of Montreal are finalists for the Hart Trophy, awarded annually to the league's most valuable player.
Finalists for the seven trophies presented by the NHL were announced Wednesday. The winners will be announced on Thursday, June 20. Iginla had 52 goals and 96 points for the Flames, who finished 32-35-12-3. The nomination of Roy and Theodore mark the first time since 1994 that two goalies have been among the three Hart finalists. Theodore, Roy and Sean Burke of Phoenix are candidates for the Vezina Trophy, which goes to the best goaltender. Roy won the award in 1989, 1990 and 1992. Norris Trophy finalists for the best defenseman are 1998 winner Rob Blake of Colorado and Detroit teammates Nicklas Lidstrom and Chris Chelios, the first time since 1969 that teammates have been Norris finalists. Chelios won in 1989, 1993 and 1996. Lidstrom is also a finalist for the Lady Byng trophy for sportsmanship, along with Ron Francis of Carolina and Joe Sakic of Colorado. Sakic won the award last year and Francis won in 1995 and 1998. Jere Lehtinen of Dallas, Michael Peca of the New York Islanders and Craig Conroy of Calgary are the finalists for the Frank Selke Trophy, awarded to the best defensive forward. Lehtinen won the award in 1998 and 1999 and Peca won it in 1997. Atlanta teammates Iyla Kovalchuk and Dany Heatley and Kristian Huselius of Florida are candidates for the Calder Trophy, which goes to the rookie of the year. Finalists for the Jack Adams Trophy, which goes to coach of the year, are Bob Francis of Phoenix, Brian Sutter of Chicago and Robbie Ftorek of Boston. Sutter won the award in 1991. |
