Sather reportedly to meet with Trottier this week

ESPN.com news services

Glen Sather is back to the drawing board.

With Colorado out of the Stanley Cup playoffs, the Rangers general manager received permission from the Avs to speak to assistant Bryan Trottier about New York's vacant coaching spot, the Newark Star-Ledger reported Monday.

Sather will likely meet with Trottier in New York this week, according to the report.

Trottier, 45, was available to interview with Sather once Detroit ousted Colorado with a 7-0 victory Friday in Game 7 of the Western Conference finals. As the Avalanche's assistant, Trottier won a Stanley Cup when Colorado beat New Jersey last year.

Trottier won six Cup championships as a center, four while he was with the Islanders (1975-90) and two during his stint with the Penguins (1990-92; 1993-94).

Trottier is the seventh candidate for the job:

  • Former Stars coach Ken Hitchcock was hired by the Flyers, and Kings assistant Dave Tippett was hired by Dallas.

  • Herb Brooks, the former Pittsburgh Penguins and two-time U.S. Olympic coach, withdrew from consideration.

  • Former Rangers and current Panthers coach Mike Keenan said he would remain in Florida.

  • Former New Jersey Devils (and Los Angeles Kings) coach Larry Robinson told the Rangers he's not interested in the job and would honor the first year of his three-year consulting deal with the Devils.

  • The other name on the rumor mill was Ted Nolan, the former Sabres coach.
