Flyers replace Cechmanek with Hackett

Associated Press

PHILADELPHIA -- Goaltender Jeff Hackett signed a two-year contract with the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday.

Hackett replaces Roman Cechmanek, who was traded to Los Angeles in May. Terms of Hackett's contract weren't immediately known.

"Our scouting staff, our coaching staff, our whole organization feels that Jeff Hackett will give us the solid and steady goaltending that we will need to take a run at the Stanley Cup," Flyers general manager Bob Clarke said. "He is also the type of goaltender that will allow us to give Robert Esche enough work to develop into a top goaltender."

Hackett was 15-17-2 with a 2.86 goals-against average and a .911 save percentage in 36 games for the Montreal Canadiens and the Boston Bruins last season.

"I'm very excited to come to a place that has some great tradition," Hackett said. "I'll be joining a lot of former teammates. I played with Mark Recchi, who I've kept in very good touch with over the years. I played a lot of years with Eric Weinrich, Jeremy Roenick and Tony Amonte."

Hackett was 8-9-0 with a 3.21 goals-against and an .894 save percentage in 18 games after being acquired by the Bruins last January. He was 1-2 and allowed just five goals in a first-round playoff loss to New Jersey. Hackett is 156-234-50 lifetime with a 2.93 goals-against and .902 save percentage.

Cechmanek had a 33-15-10 record in 58 regular-season games for the Flyers last season, and his 1.83 goals-against average was second in the league to Dallas' Marty Turco. Cechmanek's .925 save percentage was third-best in the NHL.

Cechmanek's career goals-against average in three seasons is 1.96, lowest among goaltenders with at least 150 regular-season games since 1943-44. He also has 20 shutouts.

But Cechmanek's unconventional style and erratic play in the postseason caused the Flyers to move him.

"It looked to me like the team felt like we weren't going to be able to win with Roman," Clarke said after trading Cechmanek.

Philadelphia got just a second-round pick in June's entry draft for Cechmanek.
