Isbister signs one-year deal with Edmonton

Edmonton Oilers: Left wing Brad Isbister signed a one-year deal to stay with the Oilers.

He was acquired from the New York Islanders in a March trade.

Isbister had a total of 13 goals and 17 assists last season in 13 games with the Oilers and 53 with the Islanders.

Tampa Bay Lightning: The Lightning re-signed left wing Dmitry Afanasenkov and center Martin Cibak on Tuesday.

Afanasenkov, 23, was selected by the Lightning in the 1998 entry draft. He made his North American professional debut in the IHL in 2000-01 and played 41 games last season with Springfield of the AHL. Before he was drafted he spent two seasons playing professionally in his native Russia.

Cibak, 23, of Slovakia, was also picked in the 1998 entry draft. He played in 61 games for Springfield last season after appearing in 26 games for the Lightning in 2001-02. He made his pro debut with Detroit of the IHL in 2000-01, playing in the 2001 IHL All-Star game.

Terms of the contracts were not disclosed.

Detroit Red Wings: Defenseman Jamie Rivers signed a one-year contract Tuesday with the Red Wings.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Rivers has 13 goals and 36 assists in 340 games with five NHL teams. He appeared in just one game with Florida last season, spending most of the year in the AHL.

He played in 64 games with Boston during the 2001-02 season.

Chicago Blackhawks: Left wing Ville Nieminen signed a contract with the team. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Nieminen appeared in 75 games last season for the Pittsburgh Penguins, finishing with nine goals and 12 assists.

He led the Penguins with two short-handed goals last season and was second on the team with 93 penalty minutes.

Nieminen originally was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the third round in the 1997 NHL entry draft. He was traded to the Penguins in March 2002. He also played for Finland at the 2002 Winter Olympics.

  • The Blackhawks re-signed free agent left wing Mark Bell.

    Terms of the deal were not released, but Bell made $975,000 last season.

    Bell, 22, played in all 82 regular-season games, amassing 14 goals, 15 assists and 113 penalty minutes. He was third on the club with two shorthanded goals and a face-off percentage of 52.5.

    Selected by the Blackhawks with the eighth overall pick in the 1998 draft, Bell has 26 goals, 32 assists and 241 penalty minutes in 175 games.
