Friday, April 27 Second-round flashbacks Mellanby captained the Panthers to the Cup finals in 1996. St. Louis' Scott Mellanby is the king of rats. Or at least the creator. On Oct. 8, 1996, while with the Panthers, Mellanby one-timed a rat that had invaded the locker room. His two-goal performance that night was dubbed a "Rat Trick" by John Vanbiesbrouck, now with the Devils, and started the trend of tossing rats at Miami Arena. The vermin flew with ferocity during the second round that year, when the Panthers upset No. 1-seeded Philadelphia in the second round. OTHER GREAT SECOND-ROUND MOMENTS Flashback 1939: Rangers vs. Bruins The Rangers and Bruins add fuel to their early rivalry with this seven-game semifinal thriller. Flashback 1984: Flames vs. Oilers After being swept by the Isles in the finals the previous year, the Oilers were on a mission. And the only thing standing in their way was Calgary. Flashback 1986: Whalers vs. Canadiens The end result wasn't what Hartford wanted, but the Whalers weren't expected to take the Habs to seven games.
