The Detroit Red Wings are now two years removed from their last Stanley Cup title, but with Scotty Bowman returning to run the ship, another championship run for the upcoming season cannot be ruled out. Last season, spotty goaltending and old age did the Red Wings in during the 2000 playoffs. With the exception of signing free agent center Boyd Devereaux from Edmonton, the club did little during the offseason to get younger, figuring the team still has enough gas in the tank for one more title run.
Here's a look at the rest of Detroit's training camp.
Biggest question: Too old on D?
Can the over-the-hill gang, better known as Detroit's defense, shoot straight for one more year? Detroit enters training camp with five defensemen -- Nicklas Lidstrom (30), Chris Chelios (38), Steve Duchesne (35), Todd Gill (34) and Larry Murphy (39) -- over 30-years-old. By far, that's the oldest group of defensemen in the NHL. Can the group withstand another 82-game schedule, followed by a long run at the Cup? We shall see.
Camp battles: No. 2 goalie, defense
With Chris Osgood firmly entrenched as the No. 1 netminder in Detroit, veteran Ken Wregget will duel with youngster Manny Legace in training camp to see who winds up as Osgood's backup. Legace spent last season with Manitoba in the IHL, while Wregget went 14-10-2 with a 2.66 GAA in Detroit.
There also will be a fierce battle for the sixth and seventh spots on defense. Detroit will try its best to work some new blood into the backline. Mathieu Dandenault, Jiri Fischer, Aaron Ward, Yan Golubovsky and Maxim Kuznetsov all have a legitimate shot at cracking the lineup this season and forcing players like Gill out of the picture.
Future watch
Here, ESPN.com looks at one or two young players who could make an impact, either now or in the future.
Jiri Fischer (Defense):
Though he didn't receive much ice time, Fischer nonetheless made his NHL debut with the Red Wings last season at the age of 19. The '98 first-round pick (25th overall) is a towering (6-foot-5, 210 pounds) defenseman who might provide some offense down the line. He had eight assists in 52 games last season; however, the Czech native scored 22 goals and 78 points in 65 games with Hull of the QMJL in '98-99. For his efforts, Fischer was a first-team All-Star.
Ryan Barnes (Left wing):
Barnes is a bruising power forward in the Brendan Shanahan mold. The 20-year-old can put the puck in the net and doesn't shy away from the rough stuff. Example: In '98-99, the left wing notched 30 goals and led the OHL with a whopping 399 penalty minutes in just 63 games. The 6-foot-1, 201-pounder was Detroit's second choice (55th overall) in the '98 draft and could make his debut this season.
