AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- OneWorld of Seattle improved to 6-0 in the America's Cup challenger series Friday, while the Swiss yacht Alinghi ended Oracle's unbeaten run.
OneWorld had little trouble in a 21-second victory over France's winless Le Defi. Challenger series leader Alinghi beat Oracle, backed by Larry Ellison, by 1:43.
Also, Britain's GBR Challenge upset Sweden's Victory by 48 seconds, and Stars & Stripes ended a four-match losing streak with a 1:36 triumph over Mascalzone of Italy.
Alinghi is 6-1 and OneWorld is 6-0, although the Seattle syndicate had a point deducted for a rules infraction committed before the four-month challenger series began.
Oracle led over the start line by a second, but Alinghi, helmed two-time America's Cup winner Russell Coutts of New Zealand, passed the American yacht on the first windward leg and led by 32 seconds around the first mark. By the fourth leg, the lead was 1:41.
OneWorld was expected to easily beat the winless French team, but Le Defi made an even start and showed comparative boat speed on the first upwind leg. OneWorld gained more than a minute on the first run but had to work to protect that lead when the French cut 43 seconds out of the margin on the beat to the third mark.
OneWorld's lead was 1:06 at the final mark but only 21 seconds at the finish.
Stars & Stripes led at the start and around all marks to leave Mascalzone Latino without a victory from five starts.
Defending challenger champion Prada had a bye Friday, but will be back in racing Saturday against OneWorld. |
