Four races called off for second consecutive day

Associated Press

AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- America's Cup racing was called off for the second consecutive day because of strong wind.

After a delay of more than two hours Saturday, the race committee ruled there would be no competition in the challenger series.

The wind on Hauraki Gulf averaged more than 19 knots, the maximum allowed. Similar conditions are forecast for Sunday and Monday.

The four postponed races were: Prada of Italy vs. Le Defi of France, Alinghi of Switzerland vs. Mascalzone Latino of Italy, Stars & Stripes of New York vs. Victory Challenge of Sweden and GBR Challenge of Britain vs. OneWorld of Seattle. Oracle of San Francisco had a bye.

They have been reset for Sunday, meaning the second round will extend to Nov. 2.

Alinghi leads the series with nine victories from 10 races after its 27-second triumph Thursday over OneWorld, which was previously undefeated.

The winner of the four-month Louis Vuitton Cup will face defender Team New Zealand in February.

Seven of 19 scheduled race days have been lost in the challenger series because of wind conditions. Challenger races can start in wind of more than 7 knots and less than 19.
