AUCKLAND, New Zealand -- The America's Cup campaigns of France's Le Defi and Britain's GBR Challenge ended Monday when both boats were beaten by 4-1 margins in best-of-seven challenger quarterfinals.
New York's Stars & Stripes, which beat GBR by 1 minute, 42 seconds, and Sweden's Victory Challenge, which beat Le Defi by 2:34, progress to quarterfinal repechages starting Saturday.
Repechages involve Seattle's OneWorld and Prada of Italy -- the losers of top-four quarterfinals -- and Monday's winning quarterfinalists.
The repechage winners will join Oracle of San Francisco and Alinghi of Switzerland in seeded semifinals starting on Dec. 9.
Le Defi was beset by major problems in its race with Victory. It was unable to set a spinnaker after rounding the windward mark for the second time, initially because of a broken halyard and then because of a problem with the running backstay.
It was then briefly unable to hoist its spinnaker pole until a new halyard can be fixed, and Victory's lead extended considerably.
Though Le Defi was first across the start line, by 2 seconds and in a commanding windward position, Victory led by 33 seconds at the first mark and extended on all subsequent legs.
Stars & Stripes ended Britain's first America's Cup campaign in 16 years. The remarkable sluggishness of the British yacht in the pre-start suggested GBR had made extensive underwater modifications, possibly fitting the pale-gray boat with a second rudder.
Stars & Stripes dominated the start and streaked away to a 42-second lead at the top mark but Britain rode a windshift down the first run to cut that lead by 20 seconds.
Stars and Stripes then extended the lead, its experienced crew seldom faltering tactically or in its crewwork. The New York yacht added 53 seconds to its margin on the third leg, 20 seconds on the fourth and 29 seconds on the run to the finish. |
