AUSTIN, Texas Klete Keller of Southern California won the
200-meter freestyle at the USA Swimming National Championships
Thursday.
He finished in 1 minute, 48.89 seconds, while Scott Goldblatt of
Texas finished second (1:49.31).
Nate Dusing, of Texas, jumped out to the early lead at the
midway point. Keller was fifth. Dusing was leading for the last 25
meters, but Keller used a late burst to pass four swimmers to win.
Dusing finished third (1:49.33).
"In the morning, I just wanted to make the finals," Keller
said. "After qualifying first (in prelims), I thought I could win,
and that's what I went out to do tonight."
Erik Vendt of Southern California upset Tom Wilkens of Santa
Clara in the 400 individual medley. Vendt won the event in 4:14.19,
and Wilkens finished second in 4:14.52. Wilkens was a favorite
after winning the event at the Olympic Trials.
"I kept on expecting Tom to have the same last 100 he had at
the Trials," Vendt said. "I was shocked he stayed right there.
With 15 (meters) to go, I just put my head down."

championships. Peirsol won in 54.80 and Bal finished second
