SASKATOON, Saskatchewan -- Sarah Hughes, coming off a controversial defeat against Michelle Kwan in Skate America last week, won the women's short program in Skate Canada on Friday night.
Hughes, the 16-year-old from Great Neck, N.Y., edged Kwan for the top spot entering the free skate Saturday night.
"I know I'm capable of being one of the best," Hughes said after her error-free 2½ minutes of required jumps, spins and footwork on the Saskatchewan Place ice.
Kwan fell on the triple Lutz entry into her triple-double jump combination.
"That was a little bit of a shock to me because I've been landing it cleanly," the four-time world champion said.
Japan's Fumie Suguri was third, followed by Russian star Irina Slutskaya, Ukraine's Galina Maniachenko, Switzerland's Sarah Meier and France's Laetitia Hubert. Also Friday, world champions Jamie Sale and David Pelletier of Canada won the pairs title to extend their winning streak in judged competitions to seven. Russia's Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin finished second. "This performance was much, much better than at Skate America," Pelletier said. "We rise to the occasion in front of a crowd. We train to perform and that's the key." Stephanie Kalesavich and Aaron Parchem were the top American pair, finishing fifth. Danielle and Steve Hartsell were eighth. In ice dancing, Canadian champions Shae-Lynn Bourne and Victor Kraatz of Vancouver strengthened their hold on first place with top marks in the original dance from all seven judges. |
