HRADEC KRALOVE, Czech Republic -- The United States lost to Russia 6-1 Tuesday in the quarterfinals of the World Junior Ice Hockey Championships. The Russians had goals from six players in advancing to Wednesday's semifinals. In Tuesday's other quarterfinals, Finland beat defending champion Czech Republic 3-1; Canada defeated Sweden 5-2; and Switzerland downed Slovakia in a penalty shootout after the teams tied 2-2. Russia scored four times in the second period. The only U.S. goal was by Ben Eaves, making the score 4-1. The Americans (2-1-2) lost for the first time in the tournament. "Russia is a great hockey nation and we have a lot of respect for them," U.S. coach Keith Allain said. "But I think we gave them too much respect today. We gave them a lot of room to work with and they took advantage of it." Scoring for the Russians were Stanislav Tchistov, Fedor Tyutin, Alexander Frolov, Alexander Suglobov, Denis Grebeshkov and Iouri Troubatchev. In a consolation game between teams that failed to reach the quarterfinals, France beat Belarus 3-2 in Hradec Kralove. The championship is Friday. |
