United States loses consolation game

Associated Press

PARDUBICE, Czech Republic -- Steve Ott scored two goals as Canada beat Switzerland 4-0 Wednesday in the semifinals of the world junior ice hockey championships.

Canada will meet the winner of a later semifinal between Finland and Russia in Friday's championship game. Canada, bronze medalists last year in Moscow, last played in the final three years ago in Winnipeg when it lost to Russia.

In a consolation game, the United States won 4-3 against the Czech Republic, who entered the tournament as defending champion. Dustin Brown scored the decisive goal with 3:51 remaining.

Ott, Mike Cammalleri and Brian Sutherby scored three goals for Canada within seven minutes in the second period.

Ott opened the scoring at 6:04 with a short-handed goal. Cammalleri, the tournament's leading scorer, added the second at 12:27, and Sutherby scored the third on an assist from Ott with 6:05 remaining in the second period.

With Canada one man down, Switzerland called goalie Stephan Tobias off the ice to increase its advantage in the final minutes of the match, and Ott scored the fourth goal into the empty net with 1:32 remaining.

"I have to give credit to the Swiss team for their performance," Canada's coach Stan Butler said. "We can only thank our defense and goalie (Pascal) Leclaire."

Sweden came back from a two-goal deficit to beat Slovakia 3-2 in another consolation game.
