PARDUBICE, Czech Republic -- Steve Ott scored two goals as Canada beat Switzerland 4-0 on Wednesday in the semifinals of the world junior ice hockey championships.
In the finals, Canada will play Russia, which beat Finland 2-1 in overtime Wednesday. Canada, the bronze medalist last year in Moscow, last played in the final three years ago in Winnipeg and lost to Russia.
In a consolation game, the United States won 4-3 against the Czech Republic, who entered the tournament as defending champion. Dustin Brown scored the decisive goal with 3:51 remaining.
The Americans also got power-play goals from Rob Globke, Ryan Hollweg and Dwight Helminen. Globke gave the U.S. a 1-0 lead in the first period. Hollweg tied the game at 2-2 and Helminen made it 3-2 in the second period.

Ott, Mike Cammalleri and Brian Sutherby scored three goals for Canada within seven minutes in the second period.
Ott opened the scoring at 6:04 with a short-handed goal. Cammalleri, the tournament's leading scorer, added the second at 12:27, and Sutherby scored the third on an assist from Ott with 6:05 remaining in the second period.
With Canada one man down, Switzerland called goalie Stephan Tobias off the ice to increase its advantage in the final minutes of the match, and Ott scored the fourth goal into the empty net with 1:32 remaining.
"I have to give credit to the Swiss team for their performance," Canada's coach Stan Butler said. "We can only thank our defense and goalie (Pascal) Leclaire."
Sweden came back from a two-goal deficit to beat Slovakia 3-2 in another consolation game. |
