PARK CITY, Utah -- Skeleton racer Lincoln DeWitt had two consistent runs Sunday to win on the final day of the U.S. Olympic trials, securing a likely spot in the Salt Lake Games.
DeWitt, a Park City computer programmer who won last season's World Cup title, has struggled this fall and was tied with Brian McDonald and Brady Canfield going into Sunday's competition.
DeWitt posted identical times of 49.06 in the two heats, finishing with an overall time of 1:38.12 to beat McDonald by eight-hundredths of a second.
"There was definitely some pressure, but you just have to put it out of your mind and stay relaxed," DeWitt said. "I had two of my most consistent runs today."
Tristan Gale of Salt Lake City finished 21-hundredths of a second ahead of Lea Ann Parsley of Park City to lock up the one spot the American women are guaranteed for the 2002 Winter Olympics.
"I just decided all I could do was my best and that was very calming," said Gale, who streaked her hair red, white and blue. "I was even joking around at the start line."
Jim Shea of Lake Placid, N.Y., and Chris Soule of Trumbull, Conn., already secured two guaranteed spots on the men's team based on their World Cup results, allowing them to bypass the trials.
Hometown fans cheered DeWitt as he raced down the track and later during the award ceremonies. DeWitt credited his success to a good training run Saturday and a talk with his father just before Sunday's racing.
"I knew that whoever comes through this will come through stronger than before," DeWitt said. "It really forced me to focus, which is what I will need to do in February."
The United States is expected to secure the third spot for DeWitt based on team World Cup standings, but that won't be solidified until after a competition in Switzerland on Jan. 17.
Parsley could land a position for the Olympics if the American women, currently ranked fourth, can overtake the third-place Swiss. |
