Goerl tosses a three-hitter at Taiwan in latest shutout

Associated Press

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan -- Jessica Mendoza tripled twice and Stacey Nuveman homered as the United States beat Taiwan 9-0 at the World Softball Championship on Tuesday.

Keira Goerl pitched a three-hitter for the victory in a game that was shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. The United States has won all five games at the tournament by shutout.

"Everything starts in the circle, and we feel good about the way our pitching staff is performing,'' U.S. coach Mike Candrea said. "Our pitching staff realizes they have a job to do and they have been up to the task.''

Taiwan starter Su-Hua Lin gave up seven runs in three innings. Chia-Yen Wu entered the game in the fourth inning and finished.
