QUEBEC CITY -- Sasha Cohen overcame a late fall and won the women's short program at Skate Canada on Friday night.
Cohen, who finished second to Michelle Kwan at nationals in January and was fourth at the Olympics and World Championships, fell late in her routine, but was impressive enough to finish ahead of Japan's Fumie Suguri and Russia's Viktoria Volchkova.
The 17-year-old Cohen recently moved from California to Connecticut to work with coach Tatiana Tarasova, who coaches Olympic skating champion Alexei Yagudin of Russia.
Yagudin, who withdrew from Skate Canada on Thursday, was ordered by doctors Friday to rest for three to six weeks while he attempts to recover from a career-threatening hip injury. The Russian has said his ailment is a degenerative condition from birth.
In the pairs competition, Russia's Tatiana Totmianina and Maxim Marinin delivered their second consecutive first-place performance, winning the free skate event. The Chinese duo of Qing Pang and Jian Tong finished second, followed by Canadians Patrice Archetto and Anabelle Langlois.
In ice dancing, Elena Grushina and Ruslan Goncharov of the Ukraine finished first in the original dance competition, followed by Canadians Marie-France Dubreuil and Patrice Lauzon. Bulgaria's Albena Denkova and Maxim Staviyski were third. The event finishes with the free dance Sunday.
