PANAMA CITY, Panama -- The United States Olympic baseball qualifying team waited three hours Saturday before its game against Brazil was rained out in the bottom of the first inning. The organizing committee for the Americas Baseball Continental Qualifying event had not been rescheduled. It also had not been determined if the 8 p.m. ET game between Mexico and Puerto Rico would be played. The Americans were batting when the rain hit. John VanBenschoten -- an emergency starter after Justin Duchscherer came down with a stomach virus -- allowed a leadoff double in the top of the first but worked his way out of trouble. The United States' next scheduled game is against Colombia (0-1) on Tuesday at 10 a.m. Atlanta Braves lefthander Horacio Ramirez was expected to start. |
