The George O'Leary Era at Notre Dame turned into a national joke Friday morning.

George O'Leary
"OK, so I never played at New Hampshire ... but I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night."
The humor of the situation wasn't lost on Page 2's readers as we received more than 1,200 jokes over the weekend about the O'Leary scandal. Here are the best of the best:

I don't understand why people are getting down on O'Leary when he's obviously a great college coach. Doesn't anybody remember when he and all-America linebacker Al Martin went all the way to the national championship?

George O'Leary today resigned as Notre Dame head football coach after admitting that he fabricated both academic and sports achievements on his résumé. Kevin Clines
New York

So, George O'Leary was fired from Notre Dame for claiming it was possible to get a degree while attending only three classes, and to earn three varsity letters while attending college for only two years.

I don't see what all the fuss is about ... Notre Dame coaches have been promising that to recruits for years.

Dave Rochlin
Moraga, Calif.

Look, I don't think you guys are being fair to O'Leary. If the members of the media doubt the character of this man, just talk to ex-Blue Jays manager Tim Johnson, the two of them fought side by side in Vietnam.

Dave Eichenstein
