Page 2's Power Poll

Page 2's Power Poll dares to rate the teams that are currently wielding the most power in the entire sports universe.

Each week, our poll will rate the 10 teams at the top of the power heap -- and the five teams that have lost the most power in the past week. And, by the way, Page 2 uses its own definition for a "team" -- any group of two or more bonded together for the common purpose.

Our Momentum Meter also predicts the direction these teams will be heading in future weeks (see the bottom of the page for a full explanation).

If you've got anything to say about our Top 10 or our Bottom 5, click here to comment -- or forever hold your peace. We'll run the best comments with next week's poll.

1. Philly 76ers Philadelphia 76ers Battered but unbowed, the Sixers have the best record in the NBA -- and Mutombo is on the way.

2. Colorado Avalanche Colorado Avalanche Battered but unbowed, the Avalanche have the best record in the NHL -- and Blake is on the way.

3. New York Yankees New York Yankees Locked up closer Rivera for four more years. Started rehearsing ticker-tape parade this week.

4. Phoenix Coyotes management team Phoenix Coyotes Finally, the Coyotes can call their co-owner The Great One, and Gretzky wasted no time sweeping out the old regime.

5. Big-mouth superstar outfielders Gary Sheffield The great ones all have it -- the ability to open their mouths and get rich. Watch Sheff and Bonds get mo' money. Then, they can blast their old teams like Manny.

6. Utah Jazz Utah Jazz In case you haven't noticed, the Jazz have won eight of their last nine and have the third-best record in the NBA. Don't knock Geritol 'til you try it.

7. Kentucky men's hoops Kentucky After a 3-5 start, Tubby's Wildcats are 15-2 and rolling along on an eight-game winning streak when it counts.

8. All golfers not named Tiger Woods Joe Durant Sure, Tiger didn't play in the Hope Classic. Good thing, because Joe Durant would've blown him away with the lowest total in relation to par in PGA Tour history.

9. Michigan State seniors Michigan State The Spartans' senior class tied a Big Ten record with 108 wins and have three games left. Plus, they've won 43 in a row at home.

10. Iowa State men's hoops Iowa State Cyclones' 11 straight wins include two over Kansas. Good schedule and a little luck could mean a No. 1 seed in the tournament.

ALSO RECEIVING VOTES: Buffalo Bills, Orlando Magic, Vancouver Grizzlies, Rutgers women's basketball, Tennessee women's basketball, Clemson men's basketball, Stanford men's basketball, San Jose Sharks, Washington Capitals

5. Louisville Louisville Is this any way to treat an icon? First, university brass makes graceless attempt to force out Denny Crum. Then, Cards further embarass coach by losing five of last seven.

4. Team Lindros Eric Lindros Toronto halts negotiations with Philly to acquire Eric. Papa Lindros won't be getting any comission if Eric isn't open to being dealt somewhere else.

3. St. Louis Cardinals catchers Mike Matheny "Erratic," as manager Tony La Russa called him, Rick Ankiel will make Mike Matheny, Eli Marrero and Carlos Hernandez the fittest -- and most anxiety-ridden -- catchers in the bigs.

2. XFL XFL Like the rest of you, we didn't watch the third week of games.

1. No. 1 college hoops teams Irish and Heels UNC men and Notre Dame women had a double date with upsets during Valentine's week.

ALSO RECEIVING VOTES: World Boxing Organization, New York Rangers, St. Louis Blues, Kansas men's basketball, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, Seattle SuperSonics, the Clintons

Mo' Meter explained:
No mo'; holding

Still climbing the charts

Peaked; all downhill
