| Here are your responses to last week's Page 2 Power Poll:
What does Seattle have to do to get to No. 1? Win 24 straight? Jamin Speer Lubbock, Texas You're wrong about the Mariners. They are not at their peak and all downhill from here. Just wait, they're going to make history! Julian Seattle How could the Mariners be the No. 2 in your piddly power poll? The 76ers had to go 7 against the defenseless Milwaukee Bucks and somehow managed to pull one game against the Lakers, and they are No. 1? All the Mariners have done is when a league-best 14 straight games; tied for second best start in major-league history, and completely destroy teams in the eighth inning and shut them down in the ninth. As far as the Mo Meter going down ... didn't you guys predict that a month ago and then the Mariners reeled off 14 in a row and counting? Mike Manley Tacoma, Wash. With each week that goes by you claim the Mariners have peaked with their Mo(jo) Meter. Do the right thing, put them at No. 1 and turn the arrow up! Someone throw 'em a decaf before they do end up with the best start of all-time and who knows what else, best season record ever? Go Mo'riners! TC Portland, Ore. I was just wondering how many times you can have the Seattle Mariners on your power poll, with their momentum meter showing down. Are you just guessing at them, like the rest of the league? James McDaniel Bellevue, Wash. The Mariners have been on the Flexing Their Muscles list eight weeks in a row. Five of those eight times you have said they would start losing momentum. And they're still going. When are you gonna learn? Jen Seattle Dear ESPN, I would like the name of the third grader who comes up with the team ratings for your Power Polls. I am so sick of all you East Coast hacks (uhh, writers) slighting West Coast teams. The Seattle Mariners are hands down the best team in baseball, and will continue to be so throughout the rest of the season. I seem to remember a Power Poll in late April when the M's were something like 20-5, and you guys said it was all downhill for them back then. News flash: The Mariners are going to win 110 games, and also a little thing called the World Series. So get off the Mariners. Don Steuber Durango, Colo. It was pretty weird having the Bucks at No.1 on the weak list. How can you say that about a team that made it to a pretty badly refereed series and probably had reason to complain. Also, I think a certain unbeatable Los Angeles team lost to your so-called equivalent of the M.A.S.H unit of a team. Mike Jacobson Sante Fe, N.M. How the heck could you morons put the Bucks at no.1 on the weaklings list. I'm a Sixers fan, and even I know that series was among the worst ever officiated. They had reason to be sore, they lost it because of the refs and their horrible judgment. Steve McHaley Sacramento, Calif. As always, an enjoyable read but... Do you think you might want to give the Mo' Meter an upward arrow for the Cubs finally? You guys have wanted to write them off for weeks but they have as much Mo as anybody these days. I would think winning this many games against their own division is worth a little love. Try putting the arrow up next week. Ryan Stern Santa Rosa, Calif. How could the 76ers possibly be going down on the Mo' Meter? Philadelphia is euphoric with the success that this team has brought to the city. Their confidence and emotion grows stronger with each win, and Allen Iverson, although quieted by Tyronn Lue, has elevated his game beyond levels seen since Michael Jordan. The Sixers are running on an emotional high, and they win with heart. If anything, their Mo' Meter should be on the rise, not fall. John Toukatly Wayne, Pa. All you NBA soothsayers are doing a lot of head-scratching and refiguring right now. Everyone wants to save face and say the Lakers were rusty in Game 1, the Sixers stole the game and a whole lot of other jawing. It might be better to look past the media hype and the blatant disrespect given to the East all season and recognize the Sixers as legitimate contenders. Jordan New York What? No Cappy? Jennifer Capriati just beat Williams sister No. 2 in going for her second grand slam title of the year and she's not even honorable mention? Troy Indianapolis Jennifer Capriati is rampaging through women's tennis right now. She is about to win her second straight Grand Slam title -- this one in France -- beating star after star in the process. Perhaps Venus' injury was just a plot by Pops Williams to keep her from being embarrassed by Jen? We'll never know, but I sure wouldn't want to play against her right now either. Brandon Biloxi, N.M. What about the Red Sox? They have the best bullpen in the league and once Nomar is back we will have the best batting lineup in the league! We also have the best pitcher in the league and the best run producer. I think we should at least be No. 5! Billy Phoenix I think it's baloney that you have ignored the Baltimore Orioles. Picked by SI to be the worst team in baseball, picked by others to finish in bottom five. Right now they are in third place, six games back in baseball's toughest division. Give them their recognition. They are doing it with heart, not skill! Pete Monaghan Columbia, Md. How is it that the Pirates haven't turned up in the bottom five? This is the worst team I've seen in years. And the management is particularly weak, deciding to draft a first baseman when there clearly is a need for pitching. Without a power pitcher in the organization, they chose to pass Colt Griffin for a Van Benschoten. This team will continue to be the laughing stock of the NL until Cam Bonifay is relieved of his duty. Andy Manion Knoxville, Tenn. The Cubs shall continue to rise! You all may predict that the Mariners and Cubs will fall, but I ask you a mind-altering question, who shall catch them? Oakland and St. Louis, just because they won the divisions last year? No way. The Cubs and M's are playoff bound, and will do well when they get there. Start believing! Cooper Charlotte, N.C. I Guess since Fox and NBC have NASCAR you forgot Jeff Gordon's performance Sunday -- 381 laps out of 400 for the going-away win! Lenny Reid Jackson, N.J. |
