VILLANOVA, Pa. (AP) -- Kerry Connors and Marinette Pichon scored
first-half goals to lead the Philadelphia Charge to a 2-0 victory
over the Carolina Courage on Saturday.
The victory, Philadelphia's third in three games against
Carolina, gave the Charge (10-1-4) a one-point edge over the
Courage (10-3-3) in the WUSA standings.
The loss also ended Carolina's league-record five-game winning
streak.
Connors gave Philadelphia a 1-0 lead in the 21st minute when she
left-footed a shot from the left side that found an opening
underneath the crossbar for her second goal of the season.
Pichon made it a 2-0 game four minutes later on a header for her
league-leading 13th goal of the season.
Pichon just missed her third two-goal game against Carolina this
season when she hit the right post in the ninth minute. Five of her
goals have come against the Courage this season.
Charge goalkeeper Melissa Moore was called upon to make just one
save in recording her fourth shutout and 10th win of the season, to
tie her with Kristin Luckenbill of the Courage for the league lead.
Carolina's best scoring chance came in the 74th minute when a
shot by Birgit Prinz deflected off a Philadelphia player and then
off the right post. Prinz had entered the match with eight goals in
nine games for the Courage.
The win also extended the Charge's unbeaten streak to 10 games
(6-0-4), which tied the league record.
