1999

  • Became only the fifth male to complete a career Grand Slam -- Wimbledon in 1992, the U.S. Open in 1994, the Australian in 1995, and the French Open in 1999 -- and the first American man since 1938. He did it in impressive fashion, staging a comeback at the French Open from two sets down to beat Andrei Medvedev (1-6, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4).

  • Advanced to the finals of Wimbledon before losing to Pete Sampras, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5. Despite the loss, Agassi took over the No. 1 spot from Sampras the following week. It was the first time he had held the top spot since 1996.

  • Beat Boris Becker to capture the Salem Open title.

  • Started the year by advancing to the fourth round at the Australian Open.

    1998

  • Has won each of his four ATP titles this year without dropping a set.

  • Beat Pete Sampras to win Sybase Open in San Jose, Calif. in February. Also won the Franklin Templeton Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz.; Legg Mason in Washington D.C.; Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles; Czech Indoor in Ostrava, Czech Republic.

  • He became the first player to win the Lipton title in Key Biscayne three times.

  • Held the No. 1 ranking for two weeks (Jan. 29-Feb. 5) after a reign of 30 consecutive weeks in 1995.

  • Victim of Michael Chang in the U.S. Open semifinals.

  • Won his first Australian Open title to begin the season.
