Beat Thomas Enqvist 4-6, 6-0, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) to the Australian Open title -- his second Grand Slam.
1998
Won three titles -- London Indoors (beating Cedric Pioline), the Gerry Weber Open, (beating Magnus Larsson) and the Kremlin Cup (beating Goran Ivanisevic).
Made it to the finals of the Marseille Open before falling to Thomas Enqvist, 6-4, 6-1; the President's Cup, losing to Tim Henman 7-5, 6-4; and the Eurocard Open losing to Richard Krajicek 6-4, 6-3, 6-3.

Won the Pilot Pen International, 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, over Patrick Rafter.
Lost to eventual champion Gustavo Kuerten in the French Open quarterfinals.
Did not play in the Australian Open due to a broken finger that sidelined him for nearly three months.

The French Open champion finished the year ranked a career-high third despite playing an ATP Tour-record 171 matches.
Became the first player on the ATP Tour to finish in the Top 10 in singles and doubles since Stefan Edberg and Yannick Noah in 1986-87.
Captured four singles titles in an ATP Tour-high 10 finals appearances.
Missed the U.S. Open with a strained ribcage.
In addition to his victory at Roland Garros, won titles in Adelaide, Prague and Lyon.
Also won the French Open doubles title with Daniel Vacek to become the first player to win both titles at Roland Garros since Ken Rosewall in 1968.
